Ch. 28 Mine
Any rational person would have turned Liam Sheppard down. After all, in all truth, it was pretty crazy to suddenly go on a date with the guy you’re having a not-so-smooth relationship with. What was even crazier was the fact that I was still waiting for him to take me out after eight weeks and I was already back in Utah.
The short version of the long story? I had been stuck in the hospital for around eight weeks until they finally took my cast off, revealing my new and non-broken leg. My head had already sufficiently recovered and I had gone back to Utah with Ellie, as my mother had already returned around a week prior to my departure. Liam hadn’t once come to see me since the day I had (sort of) decided to go out with him. His ‘acting career’ was his excuse.
So I found myself back in school, struggling and stressing a bunch over my crap load of all the assignments I missed while I was in treatment. It had been merely two days since I had come back, and already I felt like I was going to pass out from all the work that had been piled on me. At school Ellie had gone to the trouble of baking a really big cupcake for me as celebration for getting out of the hospital, and in the end I’d convinced her that she should half as her own celebration of recovery.
A few days later, while I was grueling over a particular hard math test from which the lessons I’d missed out on, it was announced that homecoming would be happening in two days’ time.
“This is great,” Ellie whispered to me as the teacher droned on and on about it. I looked up from my math textbook and glanced at her. “I hope Tyler Karsol asks me out. Are you going, Keegan?”
I shook my head. “No. Got too much stuff to work on.”
Ellie’s eyes widened. “I do too, but I’m still going!”
“Whatever.” I sighed, and was about to go back to my textbook when Ellie forcefully tugged on my arm.
“What?” I hissed to her.
“You’re going, whether you like it or not. I know you just want to wallow in self-pity about how Liam Sheppard never took you out—yeah, that’s right, I know about the date—but you’re going with me and hopefully Tyler. Got it?” Ellie said firmly.
“But I don’t have a dress,” I tried.
“Wear the one you wore to the Masquerade Ball!” Ellie said.
“I don’t know what happened to it, though! The doctors could have thrown it away when we came in from the car crash!” I said.
“Then we’ll go shopping tomorrow for one,” Ellie said, a triumphant smile overcoming her lips. “And don’t say that you have to go do freaking homework! We’re going shopping tomorrow, and that’s final.”
I glared at Ellie. “Fine, but I’m slapping you with something in the mall tomorrow.”
Ellie grinned and shrugged. “All right. I like being slapped by food or clothes, so have fun.”

“That one, that one!” Ellie squealed. “It would look gorgeous on you!”
“Ellie…” I groaned. “That’s what you said about the last dress, and I looked like a freaking potatoe in that one!”
“Blah, blah, blah!” Ellie said, thrusting a strapless black number in my arms. “Just try it on, woman!”
“I’m not a servant!” I said, but ducked into a changing stall anyway. I slipped off my clothes and slipped the dress on, not even looking in the mirror before I stepped outside. Ellie gave me a once-over and nodded in clear satisfaction.
