Chapter Three:
As a child, I was that girl who always had a smile on her face. People said my laughter was contagious back then, but no one would understand that anymore. My family struggled when it came to money, although, my parents never let my sister and I know.
Twins – best friends at birth. We knew everything about each other. We looked the same, shared the same thoughts, and got along better than Minnie and Mickey mouse. However, we were two completely different soles.
She was Ms. Popular in school, while I was a book nerd, and a proud one at that. Socially awkward, big glasses, and not many friends. I only had one true friend, and that was her. Of course, I hung out with all of her friends, as if they were my own, but I much would have rather read in my room than dance around to her catchy music in the basement at her slumber parties. I only stayed to make her happy.
My mother was your average mom of a popular daughter. She always wanted to be the cool parent. As nice as that was for my sister, I preferred my dad, but I never said anything. He liked to read like me. In the morning, he would sit in the armchair in the corner with the newspaper, while I sat in mom’s rocker, reading whatever book I had borrowed from the library. It was a special bond we shared. My mother and I got along well, but we both knew she and my sister had a stronger relationship.
I usually spent my weekends either at the library, or in my cave reading. My cave was my getaway, my sanctuary. It wasn’t actually a cave; I had a loft bed, and underneath there was an area with a curtain that I dubbed ‘The Cave’. It was home to my books and my cat, Scout, who slept on the bottom shelf I kept empty for her.
Scout is the only member of my family I have left. It’s been six years, and I wouldn’t be writing this without her and the few people around me.
So what happened? Where did everything go wrong?
Well, that’s why I’m here.
I am about to tell you my life story.
My life as a foster nerd.
