THIS IS MY FAVORITE ENTRY! :D

I met with a family today. They told me they would love to take me in, but there is a lot of technical stuff they have to go through before that happens. I’m excited, nervous, and a bit sad. Miss Tarrah made me tell them about my past, and I was very open about it, hoping they would understand more than my foster families had. They gave me sympathy, not that I asked for it.

I saw Lucy this morning. She seemed, I don’t know, disappointed. She’s been tired a lot, and she tells me work is hard. She’s my assigned supervisor, yes, but she also has another job with her husband at the local library. “What’s the point in paying to borrow a book if you could just buy it, instead?” Walter asks her whenever it comes up in conversation.

Walter was like an old man friend that I’ve never wanted. He can be grumpy, but Lucy absolutely loves him. As a wife to the man seven years older than her, she would always tell me, “Never forget that age is just a number.” That is one of the sayings I keep in my brain all of the time. Kids at Tarrah’s Children Home had trouble understanding it, and they sometimes joked about my closest friends being older than me.

Nobody understood except for Jordan, the seventeen-year-old girl with a boyfriend and an attitude. I liked her, always have, always will.

I made a friend today. Everyone else went out to the park with Miss Tarrah, but I didn’t want to. I was walking from the bathroom, to my room, when I felt a draft. One of the doors that was usually closed was wide open. Inside was a window that was shoved up as far as it could go, no screen. I knew full well who the room belonged to. She was the only girl who didn’t share a room. She was intimidating to the others, the oldest by two years, as everybody else was under the age of fifteen.

Feeling brave for some odd reason, I knocked on the open door. Nobody answered, and I wasn’t sure what I was doing when I set foot in the door. I didn’t say anything, just walked to the window. When I was close to it, I saw a ledge, the flat part of the roof. I stuck my head out to find her sitting on the rooftop, far away from the opening. This was my first time seeing her, as she had never attended meals and activities. “Hello?” I whispered. She looked over, squinting as if she didn’t believe it. A kid had actually gone into her room.

“Who are you?” she had asked.

“Trinity,” I told her, crawling out of the window and onto the roof, “I’m new.”

She didn’t say anything for a while, and I slowly and shakily made my way toward her. I sat a few feet away from her; she was smoking. She wore all black – skinny jeans, a band shirt, combat boots – and her make-up was darker the other side of the moon. I set my gaze on what she was looking at. The ominous clouds made it look like rain was ready to fall. We were so high up, I felt as if I could reach up and pop one of the sky creatures. Then rain would pour out of it, and I’d smile. I love the rain. “You got guts, kid,” she said suddenly. I looked at her.

 “Me?” I asked.

“No, the other one on the roof,” she retorted sarcastically. I blushed. “I’m Jordan, but call me Jo,” she told me.

“I like Jo,” I blurted. “It’s totally badass.”

She laughed. “Trying to fit in?” I looked down, embarrassed that she had noticed. “If there is one thing you should take away from life, it’s that there is never enough time to try and fit in. You just have to be you.”

When I had told Lucy about her, she didn’t like her. Of course, I didn’t tell her what she did or looked like, just her attitude toward life. I envied that attitude, and I loved her style. Hanging out with her on the roof became a routine thing. I would go over at nine, and sometimes her boyfriend, Dominic, would join us. What I liked about hanging out with them the most:

 They didn’t judge.
