~Chapter 17 ~
Greg
After me and Belle had tidied everything away, we both disappeared into our own rooms. I mean, I don’t mind having Belle in my house but sometimes you just need your own space, you know?
And plus, I had a ton of homework to get through. I leaned back against the headboard of my bed and looked up at the ceiling - just thinking about the assignments that needed to be completed as soon as possible however I was faced with the challenge of which I should do first as they were all equally important.
After what felt like ten minutes, I heard a slight ping coming from my computer indicating that I had a new message in my inbox.
I heaved myself off my bed and made my way to the computer. Once I opened up the email I took a few seconds to read it aloud.
“Dear Mr Jefford” it read. “Thank you for applying for the current vacancy at Sainsburleys. It is our great pleasure to announce that you have been recruited for the desired position on our team.”
Everything else under those two sentences did not matter to me. All I could think of was that I had got it. I had got the job!
Leaving the message opened and half read, I jumped up from my chair and started doing my happy dance. Don’t judge ok? I’m happy right now and if I looked stupid, oh well!
A thought crossed over my head as I did this. ‘Belle. What about Belle? Did she get the job?’
I stopped doing my happy dance and started to make my way to her bedroom. Forgetting about my manners, I barged into her room without knocking and caught her looking at her computer screen too.
She looked back at me and most likely caught the big cheesy smile etched onto my face.
“Did you get the job?” she asked, making sure.
I nodded with a huge smile on my face.
“What about you?” I asked.
She looked down at the floor with a slight frown on her face. Oh no!
“Belle, it’s alright.” I started to say, walking closer to her. “There will be other jobs.”
She looked up at me suddenly with a mischievous look on her face and then realisation struck me.
“You got the job, didn’t you?” I asked, squinting my eyes at her.
“Hell yeah, I got the job!” She exclaimed and started jumping up and down.
I chuckled out loud. Only Belle would make it seem as though she didn’t get the job when she clearly had. She always has been pulling my leg since the moment she came to my house.
Belle was still jumping up and down as my thoughts were rushing through my head and out of nowhere, she grabbed my hand and hugged me tight.
“I got the job. I got the job!” She repeated herself in clear astonishment.
I smiled at her happiness before hugging her back.
For a few seconds, we just held each other sharing our new found happiness but then like all good things, it had to end.
Belle pulled herself out the hug and cleared her throat awkwardly. She moved back to the computer and said aloud, “We start next week by the way.”
“Really? I didn’t know that.” I noted whilst moving closer to Belle to look at the email.
Belle turned her head back to me and asked, “Did you not finish reading the email?”
I pulled at my hair in embarrassment, “Err no I didn’t. I was so happy that I left my email unattended and came to see whether you had got the job as well.”
She shrugged nonchalantly “Well, now you know.”
I nodded my head, knowing that there was nothing else to be said. I started to walk back to my room, the excitement of starting my new job ceasing slightly and making way to get the thinking cap on and making a start on my assignments.
Before I left the room completely, I looked back to see Belle still facing the computer screen. I couldn’t see what was displayed on the screen however because her body covered the majority of the screen.
“Belle?” I asked her.
She looked back and only then was I able to see that she was looking at the Sainsburleys website. She must really be excited for this job.
“Yes?” she replied, drawing my attention from the screen back to her face.
I smiled broadly and shuffled on my toes a few times before saying, “Congratulations’...on getting the job you know? Well done.”
She smiled back at me and I prayed in my head that she hadn’t detected the nervousness in my voice.
“Yeah, you too.” She muttered, breaking my prayer. “Congratulations.”
I nodded once more before returning back to my room and I couldn’t help but think that this may be the start of something great. I could only hope that with this job, Belle would start acting her age and making something of herself.
Personally, I knew that she could do it but the real question was would she be willing to push herself to succeed or would she give up at the first hurdle and accept defeat?
As I entered my room, I concluded that whatever the outcome I would be there to make sure that she wasn’t alone through the entire process.
