EDITED.

MELINDA ABELLA

"You're crazy, nutty, loopy, off your meds," I stated as I stared at the storage unit looming in front of us, "and there is no way I am doing this"

"Just follow me" Mikey said, and swiftly climbed up the storage unit, using the safety latch as a boost. He made it look effortless, but I knew that I would fall at least a solid five feet, probably head first.

"This is breaking at least 5 laws and I usually leave the law breaking to Mack," I started as I put my left foot on the latch and hoisted myself up, "So I'm really trusting you here" Just as I said that, I lost my footing. I closed my eyes to brace for impact but opened them once I realized I had yet to bash my skull open.

"I gotcha" Mikey said and easily pulled me onto the roof of the storage unit.

"Now this one is much easier" He said as he climbed the built-in safety ladder to the roof of his high school. I followed, still in shock over the fact that Mikey could have just saved my life.

"Why did you take me here?" I wondered as I looked out into the wooded area behind the building. It had been a few weeks since I had gotten here yet this was the first time I was alone with Mikey since the pool incident.

"Because this is my favorite place in this town," He said as she sat, motioning for me to sit next to him, "and I wanted to share it with one of my new favorite people"

I was thanking the heavens that the only light was from the moon and the stars, because I was blushing far more than I would have liked.

"I've come to this rooftop a million times," He said, looking out at the sky before turning to fix his gaze on me, "but I don't think I have ever seen the stars shine as bright as they are tonight"

"Thanks for saving my life" I said breathlessly, changing the conversation in an awkward and typical Melinda kind of way.

"Anytime" He smiled, reaching out to grab my hand timidly. We intertwined fingers and stayed like that for what felt like a lifetime. We told each other everything about ourselves, the moon being our only source of light.

My phone began buzzing in my pocket, bringing me back to reality.

"Hello?" I said, picking it up before checking the caller ID.

"Melinda, thank God" I heard Mack sigh through the phone, "I've been trying to get a hold of you since ten, you were supposed to be home three hours ago dude! Brit, Nicole and I have been stalling my parents but you have to get back as soon as possible. Climb the tree next to your balcony in the backyard when you get back. HURRY!" She hung up and I got the chance to look at the time. My phone clearly displayed 1:23 AM.

"Mikey, I have to go!" I shot up and so did he, "My aunt and uncle are going to kill me if they find out where I am"

Mikey climbed down off of the roof and storage unit, with me following quickly behind him. When I stepped on the latch for the storage unit I lost my footing, yet again, and with no one to grab me, I knew I was a goner.

I felt a strong pair of arms under my lower back and my knees, and I knew who had saved my life for the second time. I opened my eyes to see Mikey smiling at me.

"I get it, I get it, you've fallen for me. Now do you want to get home or not?" I laughed and he let me down gently, interlocking his hand and mine and pulling me ahead. The two of us sprinted to my house, which was about 8 blocks away from the school.

"I'm going to need a boost" I said as we got to the tree. Mikey prepared to lift me up but before he could I kissed him on the cheek, "Thank you for tonight, sorry I had to cut it short"

"Don't worry about it, I had a great time" He said, lifting me up in the process, "Now let's get you back in your room before anyone notices"

Climbing up the tree was surprisingly easy and within a minute I was on the balcony of my room. I smiled and waved to Mikey, who blew me a kiss in return.

When I stepped into my room, I saw my doorknob jiggling. I jumped into my bed and pulled the covers over as fast as humanly possible.

"I'm telling you Mom, she's not feeling well" My Aunt Alice walked in with all the girls trailing behind her, trying to stall her even more.

I fake coughed and hoarsely said, "Auntie Alice, don't come any closer. I think I caught the flu"

"Oh sweetie, I'm sorry" She said and felt my head, which thankfully was still hot and sweaty from the running, "I'm sorry I didn't believe you girls, I'm going to go make her some tea" As soon as she left the room Mack threw a pillow at my face and all three of the girls yelled at me for being so late.

I wanted to listen to them and apologize, I really did. But the smile on my face betrayed me.

Because the entire run home, Mikey's hand was holding mine.
