CHAPTER EIGHT

HE GOT THE BRAINS, I GOT THE LOOKS

"Betty, I have to try and at least maintain a semblance of being a student here. Crap, I gotta go. I'll talk to you later" Jughead said putting the phone down on Betty as we approached the serpents table. We saw a group of them were watching a video on Sweet Peas old and tattered laptop. "Guess you guys aren't watching funny cat videos"

"Check this out," Sweet Pea said turning his laptop top towards us "some sick-in-the-head Northsider posted this video and we were just talking"

"About what?" I asked stepping closer to him.

"Fogarty wants to earn his Serpent stripes. Bring us that Northsiders head, you're in" Sweet Pea said patting Fogarty on the back. And I thought we were the only kids with weird names.

"I'm down with that" Fogarty said smiling up at us and sending a wink to me making me roll my eyes at him. The rest of the Serpents laughed at his response, clearly happy that he agreed. Sweet Pea banging his hand on the table for emphasis.

"No, guys, no..." My twin started before he was interrupted by Sweet Pea.

"What Jones?"

"I know this guy. He's milquetoast. He's a football player. It's a lame target is all I'm saying" Jughead said to him.

"You wanna prove something? Why don't you go after the Black Hood?" I told them harshly trying to keep them from hurting my friend.

Sweet Pea did a breathy laugh "Why would we do that? He's targeting Northsiders who blame the Southside for everything that is wrong in this town. We're sick of it. The Black Hood's doing some of our work for us. He's a hero"

"You are sick in the head Sweet Pea" I spat at him before strutting away.

I was trying to sleep when I heard persistent knocking on my front door. "Jughead! Open the damn door!" I yelled to the boy asleep in the other room. I finally heard movement coming from the main part of the trailer so I guessed he got up to answer the door. I also got up considering I was awake now. I turned on the kettle and sat down pulling out a bowl to have some cereal.

"Betty? What time is it?" Jughead asked leaning around the door to look at the clock in the kitchen.

"Seven-fifteen" She replied walking inside "I wanted to catch you before school" She leaned in and gave Jughead a quick kiss making me roll my eyes.

"I'm sorry. I have morning breath" He said backing away from her slightly.

"Hey Bets, you want some coffee or something?" I asked her before sending her a sweet smile.

"Hey Iz, I'm okay thanks. I'm actually on my way to the library. I asked Ms Paroo to set aside all the books she has about cryptograms and cyphers. I thought it might help us crack the black hoods code, which I'm hoping is something we can do together, Jug" I sat there listening into there conversation slightly confused about what they were talking about. What code? You'll come to realise that Jughead got all the brains and I got the looks.

"Um... actually... funnily enough, Toni and I of all people, we started working on that yesterday in the Red and Black. I can show you what we've got so far if you want" Jughead said awkwardly before sitting at the table next to me.

"Toni, Because let me guess she loves serial killers," She said in a slightly jealous tone sitting opposite me.

"She does have an affinity for the darker side of things. Yeah," Jughead said with a slight laugh at the end of the sentence.

Betty hummed in response "In that case why don't we all work on it together. You, me, Iz, Toni and Kevin"

"I don't know how much help I will be Bets," I said to her laughing slightly. Jughead patted my hand before turning back to Betty.

"Kevin?"

"Yeah it'll be like a little... code-breaking party," She said hitting him on the arm "So fun. You can host" She stood up from her seat making sure she had everything "Well I need to head off but I'll see you guys later," She said heading out of the trailer slamming the door behind her.

Me and Jughead sent each other a weird look before finishing our cereal.

I was sat home alone watching random videos on Youtube when I heard a knock on my door. I walked up do it undoing the locks to find a cold Sweet Pea at my door. "Sweet Pea, what are you doing here?"

"Um, can I come in?" He asked to which I rolled my eyes opening the door wider so he could walkthrough. He took a seat on the sofa and I joined once I had closed the door. "Look, Lizzie, I'm sorry for ignoring you and stuff, I just found it weird to be welcoming someone new into our group considering how tight we are so it was hard to put my full trust in you right away. I understand if you don't want to be friends but I really want to try, if you want to as well"

"Thanks for telling me that Sweets, and I would love to be your friend" I smiled at him. I noticed him staring at me and before we knew it our lips had touched. He was surprisingly soft and gentle but as we progressed we equally became more passionate. He laid back on the sofa bringing me onto of him, straddling his waist. Our kisses became rough and soon both of our tops had come off. Just as my hands reached down to the buckle of his belt, the door slammed open and Jughead, Betty and Toni walked in.

"Oh my god," Jughead said covering his eyes along with Toni and Betty who both made noises of surprises. Sweet Pea and I quickly pulled on our tops.

"Uh, hi guys. I think I'm gonna go but I'll see you later. Iz, I will call you or something" He said rushing out of the trailer.

"So, codes huh?" I said awkwardly sitting down on the sofa. They came and sat around me not wanting to bring up what they had just seen.
