CHAPTER SIX

SOUTHSIDE HIGH

"Kev, tell us what happened," I said whilst sat on the chair with Jughead on the armchair.

"It was full-on Carrie" Archie walked into the room looking around worriedly "Midge covered in Moose's blood, screaming like a banshee. It was insane"

"Kev what were you even doing there? You could have been shot too" Archie told him.

"I was just night-jogging, you know, as one does and suddenly I hear gunshots," Kevin says making Betty and I look at each other suspiciously.

"Look, can we agree there's a killer on the loose?" Archie asks

"With a terrible aim" Jughead added making me hit him in the leg.

"Jughead, he murdered Ms Grundy" Archie replied defensively.

"Arch, we don't know if these three crimes are related" Betty chimed in to which Archie stared at her disapprovingly.

"Guys, can we focus on what matters here? Midge and Moose are alive, Archie's dad survived. The new season of The Matchlerette starts tonight. You're all coming over to watch" Veronica said excitedly.

"There's a shooter terrorising the town, you really want us to watch a gross dating show?" I asked looking at her oddly.

"What I really want is for you guys to meet my dad, officially. Back in New York, my dad was always in his study doing very bad things, as it turns out. I'm tired of closed doors. I need to know my dad's life and he needs to know mine" She explained to us.

"Well, we'll be there V. Can't wait," Betty told her smiling.

"Thank You"

"Archie, we're going to the hospital to visit Moose. You coming?" Reg asked as he and some of the football team walked in.

"Yeah of course. I'll see you tonight Ronnie" Archie said as he let.

"Well Iz and I need to go and see our peer mentors, we were meant to be there half an hour ago," Jughead said.

"Wait, can't you guys just keep going here?" She asked us to make me smile.

"We will be fine Betty" I hugged her and Jughead gave her kiss before we left to go to Southside High.

...

Jughead and I walked through the metal detectors of Southside High, I was fine, but his alarm went off.

"It's the pins in my hat" He explained to the officer to which he told him to go back through without the hat.

When we were finally through the metal detectors and our bags had been checked, a young girl with purple highlights in her approached us "Forsythe Pendleton Jones III and Elizabeth Forsythia Jones" The girl said before taking a photo of us on her retro camera.

"Uh... actually I'm Izzy and that's Jughead" I corrected her.

"I'm Toni Topaz. I was supposed to give you guys the full animatronic tour, but some robots went insane and started killing the guests. So, we'll just wing it" She explained to us. She started walking us around the school "The classrooms don't have WIFI, the bathroom stalls don't have doors"

"What about the school paper, the Red and Black?" Jughead asked due to his interest in writing.

"Yeah, it no longer exists. Censorship? Budget cuts? Take your pick. To your right you'll find a glimpse of jingle-jangle being consumed in its natural habitat" Toni carried on.

"I'm sorry, jingle-jangle?" Jughead questioned.

"This place is crawling with the JJ. A highly addictive gutter drug. So, let's not touch that" Toni warned.

"Jingle-jangle, fascinating" I added trying to think of where I heard that name before. I scowled thinking of the boy who told me about it.

We walked ahead into what I presumed was the lunchroom. "The cafetorium, Ghoulies sit over there. Rival gang, drug dealers, street racers, rumours of cannibalism. Don't ask. And we sit over there, with the Serpents"

"You're a Southside Serpent?" I asked her, not realising it until now.

"Why do you think I volunteered to give you guys the tour?" She explained. We walked over the where the serpents were hanging out but Jughead stopped before we approached them.

"I actually think I'm gonna sit alone. Just, you know, finish my book and brood"

"Jug, come and sit with me, we're gonna be hanging around these guys we may as well get to know them" I tried to reason with him.

"I'm confused aren't you guys like serpent by blood? The twins of FP Jones" She asked us.

"Yeah, so. I self-identify as a loner, not a pack animal. I'm just gonna put my head down and get through this, okay?" He replied hitting Toni's arm before starting to walk away.

"Juggie, wait" I tried to usher him back.

"Hey, you wanna get through this? You should hang with the Serpents. If the Ghoulies get a whiff that you're alone, they'll make you their bitch before you can say American History X" She said before walking away.

"Jug, come sit with them, please don't sit alone," I asked him.

"Iz, if you wanna sit with the Serpents you go, I just don't want to be associated with a group" He smiled quickly before walking of to his own table. I rolled my eyes and joined the table that Toni was on and sat next to her starting to introduce myself to the rest of the Serpents.

...

We were now sat in our English class and I was in-between Toni and Sweet Pea.

"Fahrenheit 451 by one of my favourite authors Ray Bradbury. Let's start with the title. Can anyone tell me what the significance is?" The teacher asked us.

"What? Dammit!" Sweet Pea shouted before storming out of the lesson.

The teacher sighs but carries on like it happens all of the time. "People, there's a burning book on the cover?"

I knew Jughead knew the answer. He was looking around starting to feel bad for the teacher. When he looked at Toni she shook her head signalling for him to stay quiet.

He groaned before answering "Fahrenheit 451 is the temperature in which paper burns" Everyone turned to him in shock that someone had actually answered the question. "' It was a pleasure to burn'"

"Indeed. Thank you, Mr... Jones. And welcome to hell" The teacher finished. I decided to drop Sweet Pea a text to make sure he was ok.

Iz: Hey, why did you storm out of the classroom like that what's up?

Sweet Pea: Nothing. Don't worry.

Iz: Are you sure?

Sweet Pea: Yes. Now leave me alone. We aren't even friends.

Iz: Um okay dickhead.

I sighed before putting my phone back into my back pocket. I don't understand boys.
