       Chapter 7

Noah

I glanced across the class room at Billies painting; it was amazing and defiantly rivalled those that lined the walls of the council meeting room. I looked back down at my own work. It wasn’t too bad but compared to Billie’s it was lousy. As the bell went overhead I felt several small fingers wrap round my wrist and begin to pull me out of the class room. The fingers belonged to Billie.

“You can have lunch with me. I want you to meet my friends!” she exclaimed her eyes shone with excitement all previous embarrassment gone. She dragged me along with her making it obvious that I had no choice in the matter. Not that I would be able to refuse if I did.

We all sat on a small table in the dining hall/ canteen. Overall there were six of us Grace who I already knew and a young and energetic girl whom I remembered, from her records in the great library, as Tara sat across from me her green eyes as wide as saucers. Next to her sat a girl named Jade and a boy with scraggly brown hair whom was introduced to me as Jade’s boyfriend, Brad. Billie sat close to my side, her shoulder pressing against mine, her warmth comforting me. I hardly listened to the idle gossip of the girls surrounding me and instead turned my attention to the only other male on the table, Brad. It didn’t take me long to figure out that he was a musical guy and I wasn’t surprised to find that he played both the guitar and the oboe. He told me he was in a band and soon afterwards I confessed to playing the flute. By this time all the girls had joined our conversation too and I was beginning to really enjoy myself. “See you tonight!” Billie whispered in my ear before jumping up and leaving the canteen ready for her next class. ‘Can’t wait.’ I replied silently, smiling.

I pulled up outside Billies’ house for the second time that week and looked up at the window that leads to Billie’s room. She stood looking out at me, a calm and peaceful smile plastered to her face. As her eyes met mine she ran gleefully from her window and toward the front door to let me in. as the door opened she ran out and grabbed me by the wrist, leading my inside. I thought back to the last time I was in her room. Being in her presence had made me completely forget about my purpose here and what I was meant to be looking for, the phoenix stone. Her room was exactly how I remembered it but still I took my time examining it, looking for a small stone. Not knowing what it looked like really was a setback but I was determined to find it and bring it back before the devils got to it. At the thought of the devils I shuddered and Billie asked if I was cold. “No, I’m never cold around you.” I replied. whoa where did that come from? Billie just smiled and shuffled closer, taking my hand in hers. Hand in hand we walked together to her desk and I sat down thinking of things you could use a stone for and when I looked at the piles of loose paper and sketch books on Billie’s desk it came to me. “Do you have any paper weights?” I asked. Billie looked at me funny before answering.

“I have one that I made in primary. Why’d you ask?” she looked at me confused.

“Oh, no worries!” I exclaimed. So it’s not a paper weight, what else could it be? I looked round the room and then up to Billie. Seeing the confused look that had settled on her features I decided that this could wait for another time.  Instead I took her hand in mine and we walked together to her desk hand in hand. I sat her on the window seat and asked “so what subject are we studying today?”

“You did really well last time so I’ve decided to move on to proper and improper verbs.” Billie confided and I waited for her to continue but instead she leaned in and rested her head on my chest and I bent down kissing her on the forehead. “So, let’s begin shall we?” I said and Billie reached over to her French text book flipping it open to the fourth page and laying it on my lap. As Billie told me about the different French verbs I let her voice wash over me in calming waves. I felt the curve of her thigh pushing against mine and I couldn’t help myself. I wanted her. Slowly, my hand rose until it was level with her lower jaw. Lightly, I rested my fingertips on her chin and pulled her face round to face mine. Then I leaned in, letting my lips brush on hers. I almost expected her to pull away; instead she welcomed it pulling me closer, inviting me. I wrapped my arms around her waist while Billie tousled my hair pulling her fingers through it. We stayed in each other’s embrace for what seemed to be an eternity until Billie pulled away blushing “That was my first kiss you know.” She muttered shyly.

“Well you did great.” I muttered in her ear, pulling her closer to me.
