Chapter 9

Noah

As the first rays of light found their way into my room, I sat silently on my bed, lost deep in thought. I couldn’t get Billie’s touch out of my mind. The way she had ruffled my hair affectionately and pulled me closer to her was playing on repeat in my head. I looked out of the window willing the sun to come up quicker so that I could get to school and see her again. I stood up and went into my bathroom and decided to run a nice long relaxing bath before I went to school. I turned on the hot water and let it stream down, filling my tub with warm liquid. As I poured in the bubble bath the water started to froth, though not in the way I expected. The bubbles swirled in all the colours of the rainbow before clearing and revealing an image of the council staring out at me. All three of them looked out at me and I looked straight back at them thanking to high heavens that I hadn’t begun to undress yet. Of course I was expecting a visit from them but did not expect it to be so soon and it was a while before either of them spoke.

“Noah,” Time regarded me in a highly formal tone “we are sorry for the sudden intrusion but we must know if you are any closer to the phoenix stone.” Straight to the point much! I thought to myself. After a short pause I replied “I have gotten close to the subject as commanded and have begun my inquiry into the whereabouts of the phoenix stone” even as I said it I thought of Billie and internally sighed. Just thinking of her did strange things to me.

“Well we must hurry you,” Space said a crease forming in his brow “we have had reports of evil in your area and believe it not to be long before the devils strike.”

“We hate to give you so little time but as you know full well we have no control over the likes of them!” Destiny exclaimed

“For in order to be light there must first be darkness.” I said half to myself and the council nodded in unison. “Protect the stone at all costs!” was the last thing they said to me before promptly disappearing leaving me to bathe in peace.

I arrived at school at exactly 8:30 and walked confidently up to the gates. I knew what I had to do and I was extremely excited and nervous. Very, very nervous! What if she rejected me? What I wasn’t good enough? I was an angel so I was technically dead. What if she hated dead people? Wait if she said yes I’d have to tell her. But what if she hates me! I was so wrapped up in my thoughts that I didn’t even realise that I had reached the corridor that lead to Mrs Garcia’s room. Billie crept up behind be surprising me with a ginormous bone cracking hug from the rear. If I wasn’t already dead I would be by now! I turned to face her placing a kiss on her forehead breathing in her heavy scent. She looked up at me her eyes round and adoring. I let my fingers comb through her hair pulling it back. I bent down feeling my lips brush softly over her ear as I whispered the one question I had been dreading all morning. “Billie, will you be my girlfriend?” she looked at me her face full of sheer happiness as she grabbed me, pulling my lips to hers, and muttering between kisses “Do you even need to ask?”

The people behind us were yelling “Get a room!” but I paid no attention. All that mattered to me was her. We were suddenly halted by the stream of people flooding out of the classrooms, signalling that the next lesson was about to start. Billie told me that she had to collect some books from her car and that she would meet me in the next lesson. We kissed one last time before heading our separate ways. Not once did I think that she might be in danger something I still curse myself for today.

I arrived to my second lesson promptly after the first bell in hopes of being ‘fashionably late’ but to my surprise and disappointment Billie hadn’t arrived yet and so I preoccupied myself by sitting I my place and willing Billie to come through the door. The longer I sat there the more increasingly worried I became about Billie’s whereabouts. She only went to get her books! As the bell signalled the end of the period I decided to look for Billie myself for I feared the worst. I ran to the parking lot and to my horror Billie’s car was still there. Her small silver Peugeot had not moved an inch. I traipsed along the route that Billie should have taken to get to class hoping to find a sign that would at least give me an idea of her location. The further I walked the more prominent the smell of burnt ash became and I began to panic for burnt ash was the signature scent of the devils. As I rounded the corner I stumbled across a handful of scorched leaves, yup defiantly the work of devils. I unfurled my wings, keeping them invisible to the human eye and began to track the acrid stench that the devils had left behind. God I hope she is okay! If they’ve hurt her I don’t know what I’ll do…
