Chapter 11

Noah

I walked out of the – not so abandoned – abandoned warehouse with a sleeping Billie cradled in my arms. I relaxed into the feel of her tiny heart beating against mine. I dragged my wings round Billie, protecting her from the cold midnight winds. I thought worriedly about what Billie thinks about my wings. She didn’t react as badly as I thought she would, I mean she didn’t run away screaming like most girls would instead she sat quietly and fainted as Tyler transformed. Transforming is a gift that few devils but most angles have. It’s a way of manifesting into your true selves. Most angels transform into great big balls of pure light and, as Billie had just experienced, devils become raging tornadoes of flame. I checked Billie over for wounds for about the 36th time in the last ten minutes. She hadn’t come out to badly. Billie had a nasty bump forming at the back of her head and her nose was most defiantly broken plus her arm bore a large gash that would most probably need stiches. Those devils are going to pay!

I walked slowly up Billie’s driveway, I could have flown but I was afraid Billie would wake up and freak, ensuring my wings were completely invisible I knocked on the front door. The door automatically swung open revelling an extremely worried Mrs Anderson “Billie! Where the he…..” she trailed off as she noticed her daughter’s condition.

“Oh god… what happened!” she exclaimed “did she get drunk? God, she went to a party and got drunk didn’t she? She got drunk and fell down the stairs!” Mrs Anderson practically yanked me through the door and gestured for me to lay Billie on the couch. “Is she okay? Does she need to go to hospital? Shall I call an ambulance?” she bombarded me with questions before hurrying off to call an ambulance. I stood in shock, who knew Billie came from overprotective parents. Within minutes the ambulance was outside and ready to take Billie to hospital. Mrs Anderson followed Billie into the ambulance as I left. When I was round the corner and out of sight I cloaked myself. Once I was sure I was invisible I unfurled my wings and used them to propel me into the air. I glided gracefully following just behind the ambulance that held Billie inside making sure not to get to close so that later I could pretend that came in my car a few vehicles back. As Billie was transported into the hospital I landed gracefully and revealed myself to the naked eye. I knew that as soon as Billie woke up I’d have to tell her everything. If she’d even listen!

The hospital was a crude building with way to many windows. The doors were automatic and opened slowly revealing the spacious yellow room that served as reception, complete with speckled blue linoleum and grumpy receptionist. She sat behind a desk, hair scraped back in a greasy ponytail, eyes lazily examining each face to come through those automatic doors. I walked up to her asking where I could find Billie Andrews. She looked at me in annoyance before tapping Billies name into the computer and directing me to her ward. I wanted to say ‘see wasn’t too hard was it?!’ but I held my tongue. Billie looked terrible her skin was pale and she looked frail and weak. Her eyes were still firmly closed like she was trying to block out the world and everything in it. As a doctor walked past I asked her what was wrong with her.

“She is in deep shock and has a slight concussion but other than that she should be okay.” She smiled warmly before turning and moving briskly onto her next patient. I brushed the hair from Billies face and wrapped my hand around her limp one. As our fingers intertwined Billies eyes fluttered open and one word escaped her lips.

“You.”
