Echo's P.O.V
It was getting harder to hide. Harder to eliminate my emotions, not like I ever truly could. I could tell Alex could see right through me, but there was one thing he didn't know.I knew him. I knew everything. I knew he felt emotion. I knew he was a Void. I knew he was watching me, observing me daily.
But when he grabbed my wrist in class and pulled me away, for the first time I didn't know what to do. He was the one thing I always knew, but during that moment, I was lost.
We ended up at a small store. It was quiet as civilians roamed the streets, and I said nothing. Alex was already worried about me, but I knew he sensed it too. It was to quiet, as if everyone knew something big was about to occur. He grabbed my hand and interlaced our fingers, causing me to shiver.
Walking into the store, he let go of my hand and grabbed my shoulders, looking into my eyes. I had to crane my neck to see him.
"Go get whatever you want and meet me back here in 15 minutes. I'm paying. If you see anyone you know, run. People are getting turned in and we need to escape. Got it?" I hesitated before answering. I couldn't run very fast, and I could hardly fend for myself. I would try though, to keep him at ease.
"Got it?" He repeated softly.
I gave a small nod and he let go of my shoulders, hesitating before turning and going down an isle. I shuffled over to an isle as well, browsing by the boxes of crackers and cookies, before coming face to face with people I was scared to see
Two men stood in front of me, looking at me with blank faces. They were familiar, but no names came to mind. I knew they didn't hate me, since they really couldn't, but it seemed as if would do anything to get their way, and turning me in for extra cash wouldn't be below them.
"Echo, right?" One asked, his voice cold as he stalked towards me. I slowly turned, trying to see if Alex was around. He wasn't.
In my vulnerable state, two arms wrapped around my waist. I closed my eyes tightly, knowing how this was going to end. They would turn me in, get a few hundred bucks, and I would be slaughtered.
I didn't ask to be born like this.
The food in my hands dropped to the floor as my feet lifted off the ground. I squirmed their grasp, trying to get out of the cage they held me in. Nothing was working. Tears threatened to fall as I clenched my eyes tight. I should have listened to Alex and ran.
People passed by without a care as I was abducted. I was known in this town. The weird one. The one who cried. The Void. Not Echo though, never Echo. I wasn't worth saving, especially when Voids were being taken in.
I tried to scream, but nothing came out and I was dropped to the floor. My arms took the hit, and searing pain shot through them as I landed on the cold tile. I heard skin on skin as punched were thrown, but I couldn't open my eyes. I couldn't open my mouth, I could barely breathe.
I curled into myself, I tucked my head between my knees and began shaking. I didn't know what was a happening. Everyone was dull. I felt paralyzed. I was picked up and I knew it was Alex but still, my eyes wouldn't open.
It was terrifying.
