Alex's P.O.V

I only slowed when I saw the reflection of Callix in my rearview mirror. She began to pull over, and I did as well. My shaking hand pushed open the door, and I hopped onto the rocky terrain.

She got out of her car, meeting me on the middle and wrapping her arms around my neck. I couldn't help the sobs that tore from my mouth as I tucked my head into her shoulder.

"I let them take him." My voice came out muffled, and she ran her hand over my back in reply. I hadn't seen her in so long, but it felt like she'd never left.
She pulled back and looked me in the eye before speaking.

"You can't blame this on yourself. You had no control over it, and you can't just sit around if you want to find him. So get your ass in the truck, and start driving." I let out a teary chuckle in response, letting her go and following her back to the vehicle. Once it was running, I pressed the gas harden than I was sure was legal.

Anger coursed through my veins, fueling me to keep going. I couldn't imagine what Echo was going through, what pain they were causing him. My hands gripped the wheel just a little harder as we continued down the road. I couldn't even be sure we were going in the right direction, but I had to do something.

Night fell without me noticing, and Callix broke the long period of silence.
"I'm going to get some sleep. Wake me if you're tired and I can have a shift." I didn't respond, so she laid the seat back and drifted off.

When her steady breathing settled in, I let out the tears I didn't want to show her. The buildings began growing denser, and I was terrified that I would never find him. The city seemed almost abandoned. Trash littered the streets, and no building was complete without a broken window. Only one was lit up, light looming from the windows onto the cold streets below.

I stopped the car, carful not to wake Callix. Opening the door slowly, I grabbed my handgun from the glovebox of the car. I didn't want Echo to know of it, so I didn't really speak of it. Tucking it into the waistband of my pants, I carefully walked towards the door.

I peaked into the glass, and it was as if I was looking into a different world. Everything was to clean, to sterile.
My skin grew cooler the longer I remained outside, and goosebumps began to spread over my body.

With a final look back at the car, I pushed the door open, to be met with silence. Clean white walls joined white floors. There wasn't a decoration in sight, only two chairs that lay side by side to my right. It was almost like a hospital, but I'm sure the patients didn't leave.

I took slow steps forward, meeting a steel door that swung open with ease. A long hallway filled with more doors seemed to go on forever behind it. Every door had a window. I moved slowly, making sure I didn't make a sound. The building wasn't vacant, I could feel easily tell.

A scream shattered the silence, coming from the end of the hallway. I dropped the silent facade I'd put up and ran towards the noise, throwing the door open.

Echo lay on a table, strapped down with wires attaching him to several different machines. Tears painted his face as he turned toward the door.
"A-Alex?" I went to take a step forward, but his eyes grew wide.

There was a small prick in my arm, and it all went black.
