I was right behind Liam when he decided to stop and look around. I was not aware of him not moving and bumped into him.
"Sorry," I quietly say and back up. I felt like if I talked normally it would be really loud since it is quiet and peaceful here. We haven't seen anyone else around here in a while. I am starting to think that we might be lost. We obviously went off the trail somehow.
He turned around and saw me. "I didn't know you were walking so close behind me," he laughs at me and took off his backpack and set it on the ground. After opening the bag, he pulls out a paper from it.
"You had a map this whole time?" I asked. This would have been helpful to know earlier.
Liam looked at me and said, "It's better late than never, right Hazel Grace?"
I giggle at his attempt of being funny, but we are in a very serious situation at the moment. He unfolded the map and it was massive. I didn't know paper was made to be that big. I decided to help him and hold one side of the paper, trying to prevent it from flying away because it just had to be very windy today.
"Liam!" I shouted which caused him to look up. Once I knew I had his attention I pointed to a random direction. "There's a tree!"
He shakes his head and looks back down at the map. I did manage to make him smile. That's always a good thing. "I'm trying to figure out where we are."
I sit on the ground while waiting for Liam to decide where we should go next. I thought I heard something move from behind me. It wasn't Liam because he is standing still in front of me. "Did you hear that?" I asked him while looking to see who or what that was.
"I didn't hear anything. Hazel Grace, we are the only people here. You are probably going crazy," Liam joked but still focused on the map.
I am starting to feel a little scared. "I'm not crazy," I said. A few short seconds later and I heard a sound again.
Liam lowered the map so he was looking at me now. "Stop messing around," he sounded angry, probably frustrated since we don't know how to get out of here. Liam needs the silence to focus on finding our location on the map.
"That wasn't me." My voice was shaking when I said that.
I saw Liam past me and he pointed at something behind me. "Run, there's a bear!" he shouted, quickly picking up his backpack.
I had to turn around before getting up to look at it myself. The bear looked big and scary. It wasn't too far behind me. I'm not sure if it's a good idea to follow Liam, but I do anyway. It's not like we can get even more lost than we already are.
This situation could get worse. It could be raining right now, but thankfully it isn't and I hope it stays that way. Unless bears are allergic to rain, but I highly doubt that. I run after Liam, not sure where he is going. I see that he almost falls a few times because of some random sticks on the ground, but he manages to keep running forward. He doesn't even stop to look back. I am kind of glad he doesn't because I might run into him if I do.
I realized that I didn't turn around to see if we were still being followed by the bear. I am scared I might run into a tree or something if I do. I could stop and turn, but that would be an advantage for the bear to be closer to me.
I don't hear anything from behind me, so maybe it wandered off or something. I go behind a tree and look around it. It looked clear to me. "Liam!" I called out for him.
He was still running until he realize I called his name. He slowed down and turned around. "That was one of the most scariest moments of my life," he said when he finally stood next to me.
"I know," I agreed with him.
"So let's try to find our way out of here before something like that happens again," he says looking in his bag. I nod my head and he is still searching, moving his hand around. "Wait, I must have dropped the map," he said after a while.
I shook my head in disbelief. I would have noticed if it fell on the ground.
"Looks like we are just going to have to walk until we find an exit," he says to me. This ought to be fun.
