I woke up to the steady beep, beep, beep beside the hospital bed. I had trouble opening my eyes to see my surroundings or hearing much. Panicking, I tried to reach up for my eyes but was stopped when an excruciating pain hit my side. The pain made me forget about the pain in my eyes and I was able to open my left eye. Everything was blurry but then it cleared to my perfect vision.
The hospital room was how I expected and didn’t like. Everything was plain and white with that horrid sterile smell. I tried to sit up but found that my sides were not going to let that be a possibility. I grunted when I finally gave up. I was left to think to myself, since the only thing I could hear was my own thoughts. Did Lindsay get in trouble? Ray? And then I thought about the one thing I was worried about. What happened to Kevin?
I had the urge to cry but couldn’t produce tears due to my eye dilemma instead I put my face into my hands, being sure to not move anything in my sides, but failed. I felt pain everywhere.
I looked around the room and saw the table next to me was littered with flowers and balloons. I guess someone did care. But, my heart did sink when I found no one was at my side, the room was empty. When I had my hearing fully returned to me I heard another steady beep, beep, beep that wasn’t my monitor.
I looked to my left and saw that there was a curtain that was half opened, revealing the end of another bed with a woman standing behind it.
“When will I be able to get him out of here?” The woman asked through her tears.
“Well, your son has a lot of damage and he needs to be here a couple of days to take tests and make sure there are no internal damages including concussions or liver damage, things like that.” What I thought was the doctor said as he approached the woman putting his hand on her shoulder.
I let out a little gasp when a nurse pulled back the curtain putting the boy in full view. He was lying with his head down on the pillow with a white cotton wrap on his head. He also had, what looked like, stitches all over his face. But the one thing that made me frown was that he was smiling.
“Mom I’ll be fine. Go home and sleep.” The boy said through a raspy voice. The thing is that he couldn’t be considered a boy, he had a deep voice and had a manly structure.
“I'll be here tomorrow morning to check in on you.” the mother walked over to the boy and kissed him on the forehead but she pulled away quickly when he winced. “I’m so sorry baby. I love you.” and with that she was out the door. He followed her and when she was out of sight he put his head back and sighed.
“Now you just rest up and if you need anyone just push-“
“I’ve been in a hospital before, I know how it works.” He said in a voice that was like daggers. The doctor just nodded and looked over his chart.
While watching all this I started to feel a pulsating pain in my head, it got to the point when I let out a little scream it was so bad. Everyone’s attention was put on me and I felt like I was 10x smaller.
“Oh Miss Campbell you’re awake. How are you feeling?” he left the guys beside and came over to me putting a hand on my shoulder.
“Well beside the pain all over my body, the fact I can’t open my right eye and also that I’m sitting in this hell I feel great!” the doctor laughed at my sense of humor but I really just wanted to punch something.
“We will give you pain medication for the pain and as for your eye, we just have to wait for the swelling to go down. Do you know why you’re having pain?” he asked me. I tried to recall if I was awake when anyone announced my injuries but all I could remember was passing out in the ambulance on the way here.
