Fatima,
It's been two weeks since I last saw Halima. Her phone goes straight to voicemail. After fourteen days and numerous unanswered messages, both to you and her, I am really worried. I can't stand not knowing whether she's okay or not, please get back to me.
Tell her that I love her.
Ryan.
Ryan clicked on the send icon and sat back. He had lost count of the messages he had sent and now, he was beyond desperate. Something was wrong. He could feel it in his gut. He had never felt more helpless than he did right now.
There was nothing in her apartment that told him where he could find her. Doubts of her love for him reoccurred frequently. Had she just left him? Was this her way of ending the relationship? He couldn't bring himself to reconcile with those incessant thoughts, no. There had to be another reason, the sick feeling in his gut told him as much.
Pulling his desk drawer open, he pulled out his Bible. He had initially blamed himself for her leaving. Had he not put his needs first, he would have asked what troubled her that night and there was no way he would have allowed what followed to happen. Halima didn't deserve to part with something she so treasured, just like that, in a moment of grief.
His grief had prompted him to seek comfort. Of all the things he tried, reading the Bible had an unexplainable calming effect. Today, he needed that comfort desperately.

Fatima sat back in a couch in the executive hospital suite. The soft murmur of machines rumbled on. At first, the incessant noise had troubled her, until the doctor told her to view it as a ray of hope because it signified the presence of life.
The last two weeks had been unbelievably hectic. Having suspected foul play in their mothers' death, she and her siblings had hired a private investigator. After a few days of searching, he had unearthed an unbelievable amount of evidence against their Father. All sorts of dealings, corruption, drugs, arms trafficking, and the final blow, a confession by the servant he had hired to poison their mother. They had presented the evidence to the judge and today as she sat in the comfortable leather couch, their father was locked away in a jail cell awaiting trial.
Things were starting to get back to normal. She looked to her comatose twin on the bed, "well as normal as can get." She thought. She dragged her heavy eyes to the open laptop on the coffee table, being in the process of assuming all house and parental responsibilities, she had a lot of bills to pay.
Opening her email for the first time since their lives changed, she was not surprised by the string of messages from her various social media accounts. She almost ignored them all when a new message came in.
Ryan, "Halima's boyfriend." She thought, "I completely forgot about him". She opened the message quickly and read it. She sent a reply giving him a number with which he could reach her.
Her phone rung, instantly.
"Hello," she said.
"Hello, is this Fatima?" Came Ryan's tone filled with a mixture of both worry and excitement.
"Hi Ryan, I am so sorry. A lot has happened in the past two weeks. Are you still in Garissa?"
"Yes, where is Halima?"
She let out a shaky sigh. "Halima was involved in an accident on her way to the funeral." She said it in one breath and with bated breath waited for his reaction.
"What?" He whispered. "Wh-what do you mean? Is she? Is she...?"
"She's in a coma. Medically induced."
"Wh-where? Wh-which hospital?" I need to see her, right now."
"Nairobi Hospital. How will you get here? There is a barn on night travel for buses and you are a foreigner, do you know your way around the city?"
"I will figure it out. I will get there as soon as I can. How is she? What is the doctor's diagnosis?" He asked, his voice, strained.
Fatima felt the pain in his voice. If she had any doubt that he loved her, all those doubts were settled now. He sounded like her brothers had when she had told them the news about Halima's car wreck. He sounded like someone had reached in his ribcage and ripped out his heart. In that instant, she considered him family. She couldn't let him get lost in the jungle that is Nairobi City, she had to do something.
"How about I come to get you and you can see for yourself? Tonight."
"How? Isn't that even worse than me traveling to the city by bus? It would take twice as long. I'd rather you give me the details, it will be faster."
"No, Ryan. I am saying that I have faster means of getting there. I will be there in an hour. You are stationed at the Daadab camp aren't you?"
"Yes."
"Then get your things ready, see you soon." She hung up and lifting herself up, walked to her sister's peaceful form. "I am going to get your prince charming, Hay. Maybe his presence will help you recover quicker." She bent down and placed a kiss on the swollen cheek. "He said to tell you that he loves you." She said remembering his message.
Fatima quickly exited the room before she gave in to the tears. She dialed a number and waited patiently for the answer.
"Hello." Came a deep voice she had come to rely on recently.
"Hey, Sal. I need to rush to Garissa. I forgot to inform Halima's guy of her condition. Could you send me with your pilot?"
"He is off duty today, but I can fly you."
"Didn't you have that big meeting with your father today?"
"I skipped it, I was going to come and keep you company at the hospital tonight, anyway."
"Really?" She felt her cheeks warming up.
"Absolutely." His sultry voice vibrated through the earpiece.
"Well, I am liking this new side of you, Salim... I'll meet you at the airport in a few minutes." She said, hanging up.
