"Most nights I pray for you to come home,"

I stare deep into the mirror, in which I see nothing but her and her beautiful face. Her elegant touch to my bottom lip comforts me as she applies Neosporin to the busted open skin. Somehow, her touch doesn't cause any pain like it did when I tried to brush my finger against it.

I reach my own hand for it now, out of nowhere, completely involuntarily. Adeline smacks my hand away playfully.

"Don't, you'll irritate it even more," she says, her eyes full of sympathy. She lets out a soft sigh, "I still can't figure out how running into a door would've caused you this," she pauses for a second, as if in thought, "Did someone punch you, Cole?"

I stare back at her equally, the aching pain in my stomach now back again for another round of haunting torment.

"No," I lie. She gives me a skeptical look, as if trying to figure me out.

"Is there something you're not telling me?"

Yes

"No," I answer again solidly. At this, she cups my face within her hands, rubbing small circles on my cheeks. I reach my hands up and cup her own, the feeling of her soft skin calming me.

"Cole, I love you, and I don't want you to get hurt, alright? I may not know much but I know that this wasn't caused by a door..," she takes another pause, "did someone punch you Cole?" She says this more sternly, with more fire in her breath, she says it with such a harsh tone it takes me by surprise.

The aching becomes a knot, a huge lump weighing me down like shoes made of led.

"No, no one punched me, Adeline," I reassure her, my voice breaking because of lying straight to her face.

Her happy and radiant expression slowly sinks like a ship in water. Her hands are still placed on my face, but she pulls them away and wraps them around my shoulders. She pulls me in closer to her and places a soft kiss atop my head. I still feel the ghost of her hands on my skin, my cheeks now cold, not as warm as they were when her hands were there.

I wrap my own arms around her waist, pulling her closer to my own body, taking in a huge whiff of her scent that never seems to lighten up or go away.

"I love you, Adeline," I whisper, barely enough to be audible.

"I love you too," her speech is muffles as she readjusts her fingers in my umber locks, lacing her hands within them.

I don't know how long we stayed like that, but I don't care. This moment reminded me of last year, of when we met and she told me everything...her past, where she was going, where she was for years.

It all came crashing back to me like a wrecking ball.
