"I think of you whenever I'm alone, so please don't go,"
_____________Two Months Later:
Light penetrates the room as it peers its way through the blinds which are pulled shut. The fluorescent light flowing like a river, crowding onto the walls and carpet. The alarm clock set aside on the table standing against the bed glows with neon numbers, the crimson red numbers casting a light pinkish shadow onto the polished mahogany wood.
I roll over on my side, immediately realizing that I'm alone, just as I was at the beginning of this journey of bringing Adeline home for the final time. A small smile finds it way onto my mouth at the thought of her safe, back home, not in the hospital and defiantly not with the Owners.
"Cole!" Her bellowing voice makes its way through the halls and through the threshold of the door, slapping me like a hand to the face; the smile on my face grows wider, feeling as if it is reaching from ear to ear.
"Cole!" She shouts again, but this time, it sounds as if she's ascending the stairs. I refuse to move, the sense of feeling paralyzed replenishing my insides. Her roving steps getting closer and closer to me. A sudden scheme floods my mind, one that will take Adeline in suddenness.
Her balled fist comes pounding on the bedroom door, two and three times over. I rapidly jump out from under the sheets and get behind the door, ready to pounce. She opens the door slowly, the hinges creaking as they open wider. She peers into the room, the door only half open with me hiding behind it. Her beautiful brunette hair flows over her shoulders, guarding her face from my view.
"Cole?" She questions, her tone laced with a sliver of confusion and wonder.
Without a moment's hesitation, I swiftly stride out from behind the door as her figure paces into the room two steps further. I take hold of her waist, my body instantly warming. Her head immediately whips around, her eyes meeting mine for a split second before I close the space between us.
I capture her lips with mine, a foreign feeling I've been waiting to feel again. Adeline's body leans into me, not pulling away for any reason. I reach my hand up and lace my fingers within her locks, her own hand caressing my check, just as she did in the hospital.
That day means so much more to me than I can explain. It was the day that I could have lost my love...It was also the day that I knew she would be okay. Something from deep inside me awakened when I was sitting on the waiting chair. Something, a thought, a powerful feeling that was unstoppable. It made me realize that she would be alright, that she would overcome her struggles. It gave me hope for the first time, that she would be alright, and that we would be alright.
Adeline jars me from my thoughts when she pulls away, the warmth and the shared breaths slowly dwindling. A smile full of passion conveys across her lips as she scrutinizes my facial features, as if she's trying to remember every piece of my face.
"Cole, if you don't hurry up...you'll be late. Logan's expecting his trainer to be there," she says softly, her tone so gentle and elegant. I lean my forehead against hers, wrapping my arms around her stature, pulling her into a tight embrace.
Ever since she was clear to leave the hospital, Adeline has been begging me to find a new job, and I agreed, but Logan had other thoughts. I had introduced the idea of becoming a trainer at the ring instead of a fighter. Teaching self-defense in dangerous situations, and how to handle hostile beings who seem out of control.
Adeline agreed to this idea, and so did the others. We need the money, and this is the best option for us to afford a living. Within hours of the idea being introduced and tossed around the Ring, hundreds signed up for the lessons, some fighters and others audience members.
"Alright, do you want to come with me for my first day? I don't want you to be alone today," I offer, longing for her to say 'yes'.
Just as she's about to answer, the door bell rings. The piercing sound waves throughout the house, vibrating and bouncing off the walls all the way to our ears. Adeline gives me a puzzled glance, then strides down the stairs, I follow closely behind, donning a shirt as I reach the wood floors. A surge of cold air hits me right as I walk under a vent, the cold floors not helping to warm me up again.
Adeline stops right in front of the door as I step to the side so that she can open the door. She gives me one last glance, then unlocks the deadbolt and pulls open the heavy wood. Her expression changes quicker than the speed of light, from confused to utter disbelief. The word that slips off her tongue next, leaving me in the same state.
"Mom?"
