Ten Chapters Till The End!

"Most nights I hardly sleep when I'm alone,"

"So let me get this straight, your brother is some psycho and your lover was once with your brother and sister-in-law and they beat her, causing her to have scars, right?" He asks, reporting everything back that I had just explained to him.

  "Yes," I simply answer.

"That's ridiculous. That sounds like something that happens in a movie plot, you're really good at making things up!" He laughs, banging his fist against the leather on the wheel hysterically. He dramatically wipes an invisible tear from his eye, "you should be a comedian!"

"I'm not joking, Logan!" I exclaim in a bellowing tone. "This is serious! She could be with them right now, being tortured!"

"Well, then why didn't you believe her when she told you the first time before she left?"

"The same reason why you don't believe me now, because I thought that it was ridiculous and made up. But it only makes sense now that they've bolted and have acted strangely since they've been around for the last two days."

"Okay," he drags, "then what do you want to do? They're most likely not back at your house, that would be idiotic. So, if they do have Adeline, where would they be?"

I lean back in the chair, at complete loss of words. My mind goes blank when I think of places they could be, but then...it hits me.

  "They're in Texas," I bellow.

Logan jerks the car slightly to the right out of fright at my bewildering voice.

"What?! Why in the world would they be all the way down in Texas? We're in Massachusetts, a thousand plus miles away! There's no way that they'd be down there!" Logan affirms.

"That's where their house is, out there in the middle of nowhere. I remember Adeline telling me that when she first told me a year ago."

"Then how did you two end up meeting?" Logan questions, his face etched with confusion.

"A train, she jumped on the same train car that I was on, trying to escape New Mexico. I still recollect the first time I saw her, I almost blew my cover when I moved in the shadows." I pause for a minute, the environment going silent. "I still remember seeing her frightened face as she stared directly through me."

"You've got quite a past I must say, John Doe," he slaps a hand down on my shoulder, my body jolting forward.

"My name's Cole Richardson," I blurt. He pauses, his expression changing within seconds to one of blankness.

"Why didn't you say so the first time we met?"

"For this reason exactly. It became known that Adeline returned and that I was with her, so I didn't want anyone knowing my identity, then blurting it to someone who might be acquaintances with The Owners. I didn't want them to show up again and threaten our new life away from the past. But that didn't help, because they showed up anyway!" I shout out of anger. "They came and it ended up being my damn brother and sister-in-law! My own brother for god's sake!" The car goes quiet, the only sounds are my breaths and the revving car engine.

"Look, I'm sorry for dragging you into this," I state in a calmer tone, "but I just need someone's help to find her, I need her. I can't cope knowing that she's somewhere in danger, that she's somewhere lost and afraid like she was almost all her life. I can't do this on my own," I divulge, my stomach in knots.

"Man, I aught a get myself a girl like you have...you care so much about her," he says. I nod my head, turning to stare out the window. My surrounds whip past in a flashing blaze, the vehicle going ten above speed limit on a highway.

"How about this..." Logan begins to offer, "I will help you find Adeline, but with a few of my friends who do things like this for a living, they'll be able to guide you in the right direction, alright?"

"Yeah, alright."

"Good, now let's get back to the city so we can catch these demons," with that, Logan pushes his foot strongly on the gas, the car speeding ahead at a remarkable speed. He weaves through the endless cars on the road.

My hope from before returns, and this time, I don't think it's ever going to leave.
