"Most nights I hardly sleep, when I'm alone,"
__________

The slamming of the door rings throughout the whole house like a tornado siren. My head instantly snaps towards the area of the sound, and immediately know that it was her bedroom door, the same one she had when she was younger, the one she grew up in for a few years until being ripped away from it all. The thought sends prickly chills down my spine.

I turn back to Mason, now noticing the woman who stands beside him, a grim look plastered on her face, no smile present, letting the feeling of perpetual boredom radiate off her expression and be felt by others. She doesn't even care that I noticed, she just gives me the stink eye as if I were a hideous sight to her.

"I'll be right back," I start off by saying, "please, come in."

They both come in quietly, one's mood completely opposite from the other. With my words floating openly in the air, I jaunt up the steps, the carpet feeling rough on my bare feet. The hallway to Adeline's room seems to be growing with every step I take closer to it.

Finally, I come face to face with the white painted wood of the door, the knob yelling at me to touch it, to turn it, and I do. I enter without knocking, without warning, but it doesn't bother me that much like it would on any other day. My eyes scan the room, my retinas averting from left to right until they narrow down on their target.

Adeline sits on the window bench, her knees hugged to her chest as she sits with fear. She looks almost as if she's petrified, paralyzed, unable to move a single muscle.

"Adeline?" I quietly call, letting her know of my presence now, substituting the knocking. She doesn't move a limb, not one, she doesn't even avert her gaze to stare at me.

"Adeline," I say again, trying to get her attention, to rip her away from the thoughts she's having; but once again - not to my dismay - she doesn't move.

I decide to move myself, making her see me. I sit directly adjacent from her, and that's when I see her face. Only minutes ago her eyes were glowing with joy, now they glimmer with a terror-stricken gaze, one that I've never seen before.

"Ade-" I'm cut short by her voice, the betrayal laced within her tone hits me hard in the mind like an encyclopedia.

"You let them in, how could you? You let them in," she mutters, but still audible to my ears.

"What?" I ask, dumbfounded.

"It's them, those people...they're the one's who did this to me, Cole, they're the one's who have been taunting me, torturing me, and you let them in," she breaks her gaze from staring out of the window. She stares right at me, right through me, almost as if I were a window myself.

"Adeline, what are you talking about? They aren't the Owners, they aren't, I know. Mason's my brother, how could you accuse of him of something so horrible, Adeline? You're hallucinating, I know you are," I pause to take a breath to calm down. "Come downstairs with me, please, so I can show you that they aren't the Owners, I promise," I take her cold palms in mine, giving them a reassuring squeeze.

She doesn't say anything, but all of the sudden she stands. This subtle movement surprises me for the sole fact that I thought she wouldn't budge.

"Okay," she murmurs.
