chapter fourteen let my baby stay
millie was still running.
beads of sweat began to form on her forehead, some of them trickling down her red-tinted face.
she checked all the classrooms, hallways, offices.
the more worried millie got, the faster she ran.
millie groaned, as she opened the doors to the cafeteria, she looked around, her head turning in all directions, and still, no finn.
out of breath, millie clutched her stomach in pain. she found a seat at the last table by the back door, and sat down, attempting to let her heart and lungs to rest for a while. and surely, her lungs did. but her heart...
no.
she looked up seeing the door going the field.
an idea popped in millie's head: wait, i haven't checked there! bingo!
so, she stood up from the hard plastic chair she was sitting on, and opened the door that made a squeaking noise as it creaked.
millie looked to her left, in front of her, and to her right.
then, there he was, inhaling a cigarette, sitting on the same bleachers, where she smoked for the first time.
"finn?" millie called.
a british voice that was all too familiar brought finn out of his world full of thoughts. he looked up, seeing millie, face red, hair messy and half-drenched in sweat. then, he looked back down.
millie jogged up to him, and climbed up until she was at level with him. when she sat down, finn still didn't look up.
"finn, what happened back there?"
silence.
tension started to build up in between them, finn ignored her, and millie sighed.
"finn, i'm asking you something." he still ignored her.
"will you please look at me, finn?" millie pleaded.
finn shook his head, and scooted away from millie, who huffed.
she breathed in, "you will not say no to me, mr. wolfhard. i ran everywhere in this goddamn campus just to look for you. why? because i was fucking worried, that's why! you cannot say-"
"the blonde girl," finn interrupted her, and finally made eye contact with millie.
"what?" she whispered. "iris apatow. she used to be my girlfriend, two years ago." with every word that came from his mouth, milie paid attention to his dark brown eyes, she saw pain in glistening them, tears hanging on his lashes almost, threatening to fall.
"used to be? what happened?" finn gulped.
"she um, cheated on me with my ex-best friend, josh ovalle," a tear. "we were hanging out, me, josh, and iris. she asked me to buy some ice cream for her, and when i came back i saw them sucking face on my couch." a tear. "i felt the exact same thing when i saw her again just earlier, it felt like it was that dreading day again," a tear. "she moved away, right after that happened. no explanation, no nothing. i shut everyone out for a year," another tear. "and eventually, i also shut out love. i was placed into the mindset that love is toxic, and painful." and another tear. "i was scared, mills. i was scared to get hurt again, because god, i felt like total shit when she left." another tear. "and now that she's back, it felt like everything that happened, and everything that i felt two years ago replayed." this time it wasn't a tear, it was a sob.
finn jumped into millie's arms, sobbing, crying. she couldn't believe that the strong, smug finn wolfhard was crying on her chest.
but it all made sense to millie now, why he was so cold hearted, why he was so against love, why he wasn't replying to his soulmate. it all made sense now.
finn wolfhard was scared to love.
millie hugged him even tighter, and stroked his tangled curls, "it's okay, it's over now, it's in the past," she shushed him, finn's tears matting her white tank top. "she won't ever hurt you again, finnie, i promise. not on my watch." millie felt him smile, as his sobs stopped.
the last tear fell before he sat up again, only to rest his head on her lap. "can you sing something nice?" finn whispered. millie blushed, a smile forming on her pink lips. "okay, batman." and again, millie felt finn smile.
then, millie thought of what she was going to sing. she then remembered the last time she sang with finn; it was the same day they went to laser tag, and the same time they had their kiss. god, why does that damn day keep coming back to her- wait. mac demarco.
"i was made to love her," millie started. "been working at it," and she felt finn smile for the third time today. "half of my life, i've been an addict." millie sways her head slightly. finn's smile never left, and in some beautiful way, it widened.
though, when millie was singing, finn started to ponder about things. millie was right. it was in the past. but hey, he told himself, millie's always right.
"but she's, been good, to me," millie closes her hazel eyes, "far as i can tell, she's happy, livin' with her macky."
despite finn's dangerous past that haunted him, millie made him feel safe. a kind of safe when you feel like you drift to another planet, becoming nothing but a small speck in the universe, far away from anyone that can hurt you— the real meaning of being totally free.
"so please don't take, my love, away," finn sat up, looking at the girl, as millie continued to sing, but this time, she sang with a smile.
"let my baby stay," finn joined millie, "let my baby stay." the two sang in unison.
and finn looked into her eyes as they sang together, and it happened again; that ache finn knows as love.
"please don't take, my love, away," they sang together, then finn leaned in, millie's heart racing as their lips connected for the second time. and those sparks, ignited again, a firework feeling exploding in both of their hearts.
and when finn pulled away, he cupped her cheek, and their foreheads rested on each other for a while.
"let my baby stay." finn whispered, and looked deep into her eyes, which for him, held the whole universe.
and then his from earlier thought came back; a kind of safe when you feel like you're drift to another planet, becoming nothing but a small speck in the universe, far away from anyone that can hurt you— the real meaning of being totally free.
finn looked down as he imagined the universe as millie's small brown orbs. he imagined that if he can just look into her eyes a little bit longer, he can probably turn into that small speck, and drift away to another planet, to be free.
but maybe it wasn't just an imagination, maybe it was true. finn looked up at her eyes again, it held the stars, the constellations, all the damn galaxies. then, he felt it.
finn was just a small speck, getting lost in the universe he called millie's eyes.
