Most of Ellwood's magic energy comes from the crystal around his neck, and it enables him to basically do an unlimited amount of spells without draining his energy while he's wearing it, but if it gets smashed or broken or lost he has to use his own energy. Since the energy in his gem is a lot more potent than his normal amount, it's a lot easier to use magic with it, but he can only cast a few spells when he doesn't have it.
