Chapter 9
"What's it like to be reborn?" Sapphire asked as she drew small flowers on her textbook. She looked up to meet violet pooled orbs, looking at her and pondering.
"The word pretty much explains itself," Shay stated, tapping her chin. "It's the state of being re—" She stuck out one hand, as to represent the first syllable. Shay outstretched her former resting hand, "—born."
Sapphire shrugged, continuing with her small scribbles— peony flowers. The sight of peonies fascinated her every time, she knew she'd never get tired of it. From its color to its physical structure; the flower truly never failed to bestow her with amazement.
"You really do like those peonies, huh." Shay leaned forward, peering at Sapphire's work as the young princess picked up a pink coloured pencil to finish her art.
Sapphire nodded at Shay's words, granting the plain paper a deep shade of pink. The princess looked up once again the moment a small question floated in her mind, "Will you get to remember your past life when you're reborn?"
"I think so," said Shay as she picked up another shade of pink to complement the deeper hue. Shay puckered her lips and was yet again in thought, "Maybe a few glimpses. I don't think someone can remember their past life completely."
Sapphire paused and comprehended what Shay said. The coloured pencil fell out of her dainty fingers the moment she folded her arms in distaste. Pouting, she said, "That's too bad."
"Why so?"
"Duh!" Sapphire huffed, her obstinate gaze snapping towards Shay's. "That means I won't get to find you!" She exclaimed, throwing her hands forward in distress.
Shay chuckled as Sapphire continued to babble, watching as the princess flailed her arms around with knitted brows. "That means I'll forget you!" Sapphire stressed.
The princess raised her index finger, "Along with papa,—"
Yet another finger was raised from her tiny hand, "—mama."
Sapphire threw her hands in the air, " I might even forget Francois!"
She reclaimed her calmness once again yet folded her arms still in a state of enmity, "I obviously don't want that."
Shay hummed and soon spoke, "Don't worry."
"You sure about that?" Sapphire responded, her brow arched with doubt. She sighed, "I don't want to lose any of you."
Shay chuckled once again as her chest bloomed with the sense of belonging; knowing how someone didn't want to leave her was the best feeling in her lifetime.
Unfortunately, everyone leaves. Shay's smile faltered for a split second before flittering back to her usual grin due by the pessimistic thought. She thanked the heavens as Sapphire didn't catch the sudden change.
Shay's gaze glistened with sorrow yet was overshadowed by false hope. "When I'm reborn—" Shay begun, extending her hand forward.
Streaks of violet light soon emitted from Shay's palm, harmonizing together to form a small billow floating upon Her hand. The magic glowed bright and greeted the two with its magnificent light before dissipating into thin air.
There revealed a peony flower, flaunting its vivid shades of color and bringing immense glee to Sapphire's whole being. The flower flittered down and onto the center of Shay's palm, staring at Sapphire with its beauty.
Shay gently picked up the flower and tucked the alluring blossom behind the princess' ear, brushing Sapphire's face with its soft petals.
"—I'll find you."
