I will get my retribution for everything done upon me. Claudis can chase me down until he is blue in the face, but I won't stop. He can't make me back down. They needed to be annihilated like the bastards they are. They slaughtered and demolished my family's honor and killed my family to feel secure in this world without fear of death. Oh, they have no idea who's coming to crush that fantasy of theirs because the rage in my heart won't quell.
I raced fast weaving through the trees as I heard Claudis angrily shouting after me. Damn demon doesn't know how much those bastards ruined me. He really should give up on me. I mean come on, I went this path for a reason and I won't stop until I pay the demon lords in full.
"Ryooma!" Claudis exclaimed as I made a quick attempt to turn and noticed that the guy demon had caught up. Damn. I can't fly down here, it was too risky.
"You can stop right there because you aren't going a step further." The guy demon had ruby eyes like all demons do, but his ears were pointed like an elf and his hair a rusty red orange color.
"I could say the same here, but then you can go crying for help." I armed myself and I felt something wrong. My hand shook uncontrollably as I tried to hold onto the dagger.
Dodge now.
I dodged and the shaking stopped. I saw the surprise on the demon's face. Nice.
No time to admire, now run.
I burst off running again. The ground was getting extremely uneven to run on and I slowed to a brisk pace as I halted at a steep ditch. I slid down clawing at the soft, muddy earth on my way down into the ditch. I landed too hard on my right ankle and I'm pretty sure I sprained it.
"Shit," I said as I tried to walk on the hurt ankle, but it wasn't working well. Now, running isn't an option unless I find a clearing which could be miles out. I trudged through the ditch searching for a way out of this mess.
The demons can hunt like wolves, but I'm already onto the verge of vengeance. They created me, and now, they are going to die in a bloodbath like they did to my family.
I tried to move as quick and quiet through the ditch. I heard them catching up and a slight chill ran along my skin. I hugged my arms over my chest, but the cold had permeated it's way into me. I shivered uncontrollably as my teeth started to chatter. I rubbed my arms trying to get some warmth, but it seemed useless. It was hopeless to expect that warmth would melt away the icy blood in my veins. Ridiculous, just pathetic. I hated being so listless, but this was the usual routine from escaping a demon lord. You run, hurt yourself, and end up growing colder because of their hot pursuit of you.
A branch snapped nearby within a few yards of me and I scanned the area frantically. If Claudis keeps this up, I'll be at his mercy. I wasn't built as impervious as the demons think I am. No, I was more vulnerable when I was on an emotional spiral. I spotted Claudis staring me down as I glanced up into his eyes from the bottom of this wretched little ditch for ruining my exit plan. He leapt down to me and I attempted to get as much distance between us as possible.
"Ryoma, that is enough running away from me." His voice caused me to stop and I braced myself against the muddy wall of the ditch. I narrowed my eyes at him annoyed by his steadfast actions, he did them so often it made me want to vomit. "Why are you so quick to vengeance, it is unlike you?"
I just glared in his direction and made no effort to answer him.
"Why did you avoid killing me back there?" He asked with that silky tone of his and my heart twinged weakly giving way to his voice. I felt hot in the face and averted my eyes from his.
I covered myself with my wings as they wrapped around me with a gentle warmth in them. It felt nice almost like basking in the light of the sun. I still felt cold. I caught sight of my breath in a wispy line in the frigid air around me. My lungs felt like lead. How much do I have to run to escape Claudis?
I sighed reluctantly and gave up. I had nowhere to run and I was getting annoyed by him chasing me. I didn't want to be found or the prey, but demons made me do this. Yeah, they started this and I'm finishing it.
Claudis inched carefully beside me and I couldn't help but think he was a normal person who stood in my way out of concern. "What is it, Ryoma, why does it matter what they did?"
I clinched my mouth shut and slammed my hand against the wall of mud leaving a small impression of my anger on display. "They took it all away from me!" I heard my voice crack under the weight in my heart. "Nothing lasts, nothing I care about lasts!"
I tore at the saturated wall of dark brown dirt as it coated my forearms. I kicked at the wall in my way and Claudis gripped my right ankle. I cringed as he held it, and he let go of it.
"You carried the memory of them with you. That lasts Ryoma. The cheer, smiles, and happy times always remain though they are no longer there." Is he trying to cheer me up, he can't be serious? A demon lord trying to act friendly to an angel? It's laughable. No way could he make me feel joy.
"What the hell is your angle, Claudis?" I asked as I glanced over at him briefly. His eyes caught mine instantly and it was like staring into two blood pools. "I don't get you, you keep acting like a human despite the fact you're a demon. Explain that because every demon I've ever met has been nothing but assholes."
Claudis only stared momentarily as he got closer and my heart sounded like it would burst by his close proximity to me. "Because even demons come from the human heart, just as angels do. We took wrong turns in our lives, and many fall prey to their overexagerated sense of power." He took a breath and continued, "I am more righteous than most, but many of the demon lords are out to get angels for subjugation. We do the things they refuse to do themselves, that is our lot in life."
I could tell he was being serious, but even if truth came from his lips, it wouldn't ease the pain rippling inside me. "Stupid idea," I said in defiance as I brought my eyes to face his. "Whether that is the case or not, they will to obtain it because they lack any remnant of human hearts. They plague man with the same cruelty the angels did."
His eyes shimmered lightly as I tore my eyes away. He can say it is for the good of all, but it will never be corrected through the same means as it was caused.
"I don't fight without a reason, remember that, Claudis." I said as I maneuvered unsteadily on my feet as he caught me by my shoulders. I tried to slap them away, but I stopped. I didn't care anymore, I was already hurt what could be worse.
"Ryoma, did-?" He began to ask as I cringed trying to put weight on the damaged right foot.
"Ah, shit," I said bitterly. "I really hate it when this happens." I felt him pick me up into the bridal carry. Shoot me please, anyone, I'm not into this kind of thing.
I squirmed and tried to wriggle out of his hold, but it was impossible to with demon strength like grappling hooks. "You were not planning on walking with a sprain, were you?" He asked and I stared frustrated at his hands were insanely strong.
"And who's fault is it for being stubborn to stay out of my business?" I prompted pisses off by his need to baby me.
"Who is stupid for running in haste to get away when he should have listen to me?" He grinned at me and I shot him a glare of annoyance. "You always are hurt when I find you, who would guess the angelic reaper was so careless."
I fummed at that last remark and I wanted to punch him again. No way will either of us will be friends. I'd rather break my neck the next time I fall in a ditch, at least I could die without humiliation of a freaking demon lord carrying me around like a maiden. God, what I wouldn't give to kill him in the blink of an eye.
Claudis was warmer than my wings could cover, but still, why the hell did it have to be him?
Another chapter, whoo hoo. Stick with me, there's a reason for all of Ryoma's refusals to Claudis helping him. It kinda makes me laugh how they argue. Until next chapter...
