"Mom for the last time. I. Am. Fine!" I spat as I sit on my bed with my book. "I don't need to socialize! Just leave me alone!"
Moms patience is wavering and I can see she is trying to hold herself together.
"Honey, I know its only been a week but maybe going on a little ride with Diana will help."
"Its never going to be the same! Hersheys gone! Forever! I would rather just be in my room for the rest of my life."
"Fine. But remember to come to dinner at 6."
My mom closes the door and I sit there glowering at the wall.
Why can't they leave me alone? They only make it worse when they try to make me feel better.
I turn and bury my head into my pillow. The tears are threatening to make an appearance. "I'm sorry Hershey" I mumble.
My face begins to turn red as I try to hold the tears in but my head begins to hurt until I can't hold it in anymore and I begin to cry until I have no more tears left.
I lay on my bed for what seems like forever until my sister, Hannah, comes and tells me it's time for dinner.
I groan "I don't want to come" Hannah just gives me a look "I don't care but mom does so you better get your butt down there."
She walks out of my room and I groan again. I hate when shes right!
I drag myself off the bed, out my room, and down the stairs.
I walk in to find my family has already sat down to dinner. I can tell mom is trying to make me feel better because for dinner we are having my favorite, steak and loaded bake potatoes.
I sit down as my Dad starts to lead us in prayer.
As I listen to him pray I hear him pray for me "and Lord please help Nicole heal after this recent passing of Hershey" he says.
After prayer there is a small moment of silence before the silverware begins to hit plates as we begin to dig into the delicious meal.
My Dad begins talking about how the harvest is going to be this year. I listen because my Dad is going to make sure I help. When we harvest, everyone helps out.
Mom cuts in a few minutes later
"Oh Nicole, I talked with Diana's mother about a new horse and she said we should adopt a rescue horse. Do you think you could go with me to the shelter and we could find one for you?"
"Mom" I whine "I don't really want a new horse right now. It's just to soon." I look down at my plate
"Oh, ok honey maybe some other time." My mom says and then there is another moment of silence until Hannah begins a new conversation.
The conversation turns to our ranch. We own a lot of cows and just enough horses to help with cattle.
My family is big in the rodeo business but I'm the one who competed the most. Always the one obsessed with winning.
Finally, dinner is finished and I have to go do the evening chores.
Put in the horses, pen up chickens, check cows. I always make sure to pet our dogs when I go out and our many barn cats are everywhere.
I finish and drag myself back up to my room and fall into bed. I stare at the ceiling until it begins to fade and I finally sleep.
