"I want my horse back" the man growls. "I'm sorry but this is not the time to talk about this but maybe we can talk tomorrow" My dad replies.
"I want my horse back!" The man yells, more insistent this time.
"Sir, I'm sorry but you have to leave"
"Ugh!" The man yells in frustration. He still doesn't move.
"Sir, need to leave or I will call the police!"
My Dad starts to close the door but the man still doesn't move. The door fully closes and my Dad reaches for the pistol that he keeps by the door. We live to far away from town for the police to reach us in time so we keep the gun for self defence.
"I hope I don't have to use this" My Dad mutters.
Luckily he doesn't, the man wanders off the porch and into the darknesss. I let out a sigh of relief and my muscles relax.
I hear the sound of someone running down stairs and then Hannah's head appears. "Who was at the door?" She asks casually.
"Just some crazy guy" My dad mutters
"Oh" Hannah replies and then clomps back up the stairs and then I hear the sound of her door slamming closed.
I walk back over to the couch where my book is sitting open. In my haste to get to the door I knocked my book and lost my place. I flip through until my eyes land on the page I had been reading.
I try to get absorbed into my book but I keep casting nervous glances to the door as if I expect the man to come bounding through the door. Daisy and Boomer are on high alert and keep close to us and raise their heads to the door every now and then
"Nicole, you should go on up to bed" my mom says wearily.
I nod and grab my book. Daisy follows me half way up the stairs but then turns around and goes to lay in the middle of the living room floor next to Boomer.
My parents are tense. I doubt any of us will get much sleep tonight. I stumble up the last half of the stairs and take a right to my sisters room instead of left to mine.
I hear the country radio station blaring as I knock on the closed door. Hannah opens it and invites me into her room.
Hannah absolutely loves music. Her walls are covered with old records and band posters and she has a guitar as well as a piano set up in one corner. She sings and even writes her own music. Sometimes I can hear her playing.
"What's up?" Hannah asks as she turns the music down.
"I'm scared"
"Over what?"
"That guy. What if he takes Destiny or hurts her or even kills her!"
"We can't do anything right now. Besides that guy already left so I think we are fine for tonight. You should go get some sleep."
"I guess you're right" I sigh and get up and go to my room. I do feel a little better.
But only a little.
