I stare in shock at the mare outside my window. My bare feet growing cold on the hardwood floor brings me to my senses. I turn and search around my dark room until I find my coat and boots.

I quickly throw my coat over my night clothes, pull on my boots and dash out of bedroom.

I slow my steps on the stairs, trying not to awaken mom and dad.

I make it outside. The cold night air hits me and shocks me fully awake.

I carefully close the screen door this time trying to not awaken the dogs. I climb down the steps of the porch and move towards the mare.

"Hey baby" I whisper while holding out my hand and taking small slow steps towards her. The mare snorts in alarm but is trying to hold her ground.

She pricks her ears forward and stretches her muzzle toward my hand. I smile when her lips tickle my hand looking for treats.

"What a sweetie" I say and step closer to her. She takes one small step back. She isn't as scared as before but I can see she still doesn't trust me.

"I would never hurt you" I murmur and I try moving forward again. This time the mare sniffs my hand instead of moving away.

"I have to go" I say and I turn away and start walking back to the house. I hear a second set of foot steps behind me and I turn to see the mare has started to follow me.

She gives me a small whinny and walks toward me,this time showing no fear. I turn and stretch out my hand towards her face and scratch her between the ears.

This has to be a dream, I think as I walk towards the horse pasture and swing the gate open. The mare walks through without hesitation.

Instead of joining the other horses , the mare chooses her own corner and starts to graze.

I make my way back to the house. As I walk up the steps of the porch I hear the familiar creak of the porch swing. Turning I see Hannah swing back and forth. She gives me a small smile.
