It had been a week since Mei had run away from home, Yuzu kept praying that it was all some kind of cruel joke, but the truth would always hit... Mei wasn't the joking kind.
Yuzu lay in bed, clutching the note within her hand as she fought back tears, there was a gentle tap on her door.
"Yuzu" Her mom spoke "Yuzu, are you ok? you haven't been too active recently..." she said, her voice showing consern as she spoke through the door to her daughter.
"Mama, I'm perfectly fine." was all she could force out in her usual cheerful tone, just speaking to her mother had hurt, knowing her mother hid the fact she knew about Mei's engagement from her.
"Well.. I just came to check up on you." there was a short pause "Harumi is at the door, she mentioned taking you to the mall"
Harumi had been Yuzu's closest friend since she moved to the city after her mother remarried, she was the only girl Yuzu's age who wasn't broken into the academies system like all the other girls.
Yuzu let out a gentle and soft sigh of defeat, she knew if she didn't get out of bed and go out Harumi would drag her out of bed. She pulled herself out of bed and approached the wardrobe, she really wasn't in the mood for this today.
"YUZU!" called out Harumi, she was clearly growing impatient.
"I'm coming!" Yuzu yelled back as she threw on a cute patterned skirt and a pink button-up shirt, she grabbed her keys, bag and phone before rushing to the front door.
"I'll see yo-" Yuzu's mom was cut off by the door being slammed closed behind Yuzu, she couldn't help but laugh gently to herself, Yuzu definitely reminded her of herself at a younger age.
Harumi pulled Yuzu up the street, as Yuzu followed she couldn't help but laugh, even in her emotionally broken state. Harumi knew exactly how to make Yuzu smile, they were best friends. when the duo arrived at the mall, Yuzu looked over at Harumi.
"and why are we here?" Yuzu asked Harumi, she LOVED to shop, but this was the 2nd time in a week that Harumi had gone to the mall.
"Because you are currently an emotional mess" Harumi explained "I get it, you are hurting because Mei left, but let's just face it. she was only your stepsister." hearing that had hurt Yuzu a bit, admittedly that is all they were at first, but after that trip to the Yasaka shrine in Kyoto, there was a genuine loving connection. beforehand it was just, the occasional kiss and a lot of sexual tension between them both.
Just thinking about Mei, the way she threw herself onto Yuzu, the first kiss, the groping, the way Mei topped her without even trying, Yuzu zoned out as she touched her fingers to her lips gently just thinking about it.
"Hey!" snapped Harumi "Are you even listening to me!?" she glared at Yuzu, causing her to laugh softly as she rubbed the back of her neck.
"I uh... yeah, of course. I just..." Yuzu needed to find something, her attention turned to the nearest jewellery store "I saw this store and felt you would like it" Yuzu stated, clearly trying to find a way out of her situation, she didn't want Harumi knowing about Mei still being on her mind, especially in that way.
Once inside the store, Yuzu looked around and saw a cute pair of rings. they looked very similar to the ones she had bought for her and Mei to wear together, she bit her lip gently as she tried to stop herself from tearing up, she missed that overly stubborn girl so much. Mei was all she wanted in life, she could be without everything, but if Mei was the one she got to wake up beside every morning, it'd be worth it.
Harumi gave the store a careful look, not really seeing anything that caught her attention. she had really tried to like the items, but everything was just so bland, she went over to Yuzu and tugged on her sleeve gently.
"Let's find somewhere else, I wanna find something at least worth buying" Harumi spoke quietly not wanting to offend the store owner, Yuzu responded with a gentle nod, not really wanting to say much. Yuzu took her arm and lead her out of the store.
The rest of their shop was uneventful, this leads them to hang out at Harumi's place and watching some bad YouTube videos together till it got dark out.
Once the sun had set, Yuzu and Harumi gave each other a quick hug before parting ways for the evening, as Yuzu made her way home she walked a path near the waterfront that Mei and her had walked maybe a hundred times, Yuzu tried to reach to her side before sighing knowing that Mei wouldn't just appear and hold her hand, she tucked her hands into her pockets as she walked.
she froze moments later when she heard a muffled sobbing, Yuzu looked around and saw a dark-haired young woman crying into her hands as she leaned against the walling next to the waterfront, Yuzu slowly approached her, having always cared about people even if they were strangers.
"Hey... are you ok?" Yuzu asked softly as she got closer to the young girl, the girl looked up at her. the sweet purple eyes were easily recognizable, they had Yuzu frozen in place "M-mei!?" she stammered...
