Saving On Our Own | Book 1

Chapter 11

Steve and Bucky are sneaking through the HYDRA base when suddenly they heard doors opening.

"You ready?"

"Yea." The wait for the final door to open, and when it does the Starks stand there in their suits.

"You seem a little defensive." Tony says walking forward. You following closely behind him.

"It's been a long day."

"Calm down Buck. He's not after you right now." You say, loud enough to for Bucky to hear but quiet enough that anyone who's here doesn't hear you.

"Then why is he here?" Steve asks, still keeping his shield up.

"Could be your story's not so crazy. Maybe. Ross has no idea I'm here I'd like to keep it that way. Otherwise I gotta arrest myself." Tony says.

"Well, that sounds like a lot of paperwork." Cap says lowering his shield. "It's good to see you Tony, y/n."

"You too, Cap." Tony looks up to Bucky you still sits on the stairs, gun raised at Tony. "Hey, Manchurian Candidate, you're killing me. There's a truce here. You can drop..." Right then you speed up to Bucky, quieting your father. You set a hand on the barrel and lower it. Bucky's eyes soften at the sight of you.

The four slowly walk together, Tony leading, you and Bucky in the center, Cap in the back. Suddenly Tony speaks after turning a corner. "I got heat signatures."

"How many?" Steve asks.

"Uhh, one." Tony hesitates.

"You sure Dad?"

"Yep."

You all walk forward into a room with six containers. Suddenly a voice comes over the PA. "If it's any comfort, they died in their sleep." Bucky walks by a tank and sees one with a bullet hole right between the eyes. You stand behind him and see, gasping at the sight. "Did you really think I wanted more of you?"

"What the hell?" Bucky asks, tightening his grip on the gun. As you walk you see each one with a bullet whole between the eyes.

"I'm grateful to them though." The voice speaks again. "They brought you here." Suddenly a face is seen at the wall opposite of where they entered and Steve throws his shield at it but it bounces back. "Please, Captain. The soviets built this chamber to withstand the launch blast of UR-100 rockets."

"I'm betting I can beat them." Tony shouts. As you all walk towards her.

"Oh, I'm sure you could, Mr. Stark. Given time. But then you'd never know why you came."

"You killed innocent people in Vienna just to bring us here?" You ask walking closer, despite Bucky trying to stop you. Steve moves up with you.

"I've thought about nothing else for over a year. I studied you, Captain. I followed you. But now that you're standing here I just realized, there's a bit of green in the blue of your eyes. How nice to find a flaw."

"You're Sokovian. Is that what this is about?" Steve asks.

"Sokovia was a failed state long before you blew it to hell. No. I'm here because I made a promise."

"You lost someone?" Steve asks.

"I lost everyone. And so will you." Zemo presses a button and a video plays on the computer next to you and Cap. You move to the screen. Steve questionly looks at Zemo before moving to the screen as well. "An empire toppled by its enemies can rise again. But one which crumples from within? That's dead. Forever."

Tony comes around to view the screen. Bucky moves up too. As soon as Tony looks at the footage he notices something. "I know that road. What is this?"

On the screen a car crashes into a tree. The three Avengers watch closely as a man on a motorcycle pulls up behind them. Tony and y/n stare at the screen, tears brimming their eyes realizing that was Tony's parents' car. Steve looks at them, sincere in his eyes. The Starks watch as Howard climbs out of the car, beginning for the man unknown to him to help his wife. He looks up to see the man and everyone hears him speak. "Sergeant Barnes?"

"Howard?" They hear Steve's mom say. Y/n looks up to Bucky then back to the video. Right then the Bucky in the video starts bashing in Howard's face with his metal arm. "Howard!" Bucky's grip on his gun loosens. You start to cry and Tony tries to hold back his tears. Howard falls to the ground dead. Bucky drags him up and places him back into the car with Tony's mom. Bucky walks to the passenger side and wraps his hand around her neck, cutting off her air flow until she's dead. The next clip shows Bucky looking at a camera and he shoots it.

Steve looks sadly at Tony as the video ends. Tony instantly reacts and moves to attack Bucky but Steve grabs his shoulder and you speed in front of him, placing your hands on his chest. "Please Dad, don't."

Tony turns to Steve and chokes out. "Did you know?"

"I didn't know it was him." Steve calmly responds.

"Don't bullshit me, Rogers. Did you know?" Tony asks more firmly.

"Yes." Tony steps back. You look to Steve, shocked. Tony nods and then looks down before punching Steve in the face. Bucky pulls his gun up to shoot but Tony blasts the gun. Bucky tries to fight but Tony quickly takes him down.

"Daddy!" Tony places his foot on Bucky's metal arm and attempt to blast him but Steve throws his shield at Tony, moving his arm before the blast can hit Bucky. Tony knocks Steve back and sends cuffs towards Steve. They wrap around Steve's legs. "Dad stop it!" Bucky punches Tony and Tony picks him up and pins him hi against the wall. Tony goes to blast Bucky but buck grabs Tony's hand and crushes it. Tony goes to use a rocket but Bucky turns it away and it himself the wall right above you. The wall comes tumbling down and you scream as it comes down on you. Steve breaks free of his restraints and runs over and pulls you out. Each pillar starts to tumble down as Tony repeatedly punches Bucky. A pillar comes down on top of them as you scram. "Dad!"

"Get out of here." You hear Steve say to Bucky and Bucky moves to leave. Tony shoots at him but Bucky makes it out and jumps in front of the path. "It wasn't him Tony. HYDRA had control of his mind."

"Move!" Tony simply says.

"It wasn't him!" Steve shouts as Tony flys past Steve but Steve grabs his ankle and hits his shield against it till the thruster stops working. Tony lands and as Steve chases after him Tony makes the entrance way cave in, trapping you on the same side as Steve. Steve quickly turns to you. "Y/n please. You know that wasn't Bucky. You know the real him. He wouldn't hurt anyone on purpose."

"But do I Steve? Do I really? Because I right now it feels like Dad is in the right here."

"Y/n if you don't help me get over there not only will Buck die but so will your dad. Please." You look at him and sigh before speeding him in front of Bucky. You watch Bucky run and then see Steve and Tony fall towards the bottom.

"Dad! Steve!" You shout from the top. You watch Tony knock Steve's shield to the ground and shoot a rocket up. As soon as you saw where it was heading it was too late. The blast was two feet away from you and knocks you forward and you fall over a hundred feet to the ground screaming.

"Y/n!" Tony shouts diving after you. He catches you just before you hit the ground and gently lays you on the ground. "I'm sorry sweetheart but I have to finish this." And with that Tony flies up to where Bucky is and they start fighting again. You can't take the sight and speed to Peter's apartment. You knock on his window and he opens it up.

"Y/n?" You instantly break down and Peter pulls you in through the window and hugs you. "Shhhh. It's okay babe. What happened?"
