Internal Sacrifice

The Undertaking

I can hear shouting and lightings are flashing above my heads, I know Gideon must be somewhere near by. Slowly the shape begin to disappearing and dissolve into blackness.

"We have been living in the shadows for too long, it is time we take our stand. Who will join us in our new world? Who will stand by us against the ones who call them our enemy?"

I can see him talk, but I know it's Gideon. It's the day of the undertaking, the day the world changed.

"Before you decide, remember this. Those who don't follow, those who ignore our kind offer for freedom under my charge, will not be treated with pardon. They will not be harm as long as they do not harm us, let us live in peace and we will do the same."

Everybody was silent.

"Who will join us?" Gideon finished.

Lights finally begin to flood my eyes, it's over welming at first until the world comes into focus

"Kathryn?"

My head shoots up and towards to voice

"Yes." I reply in a somewhat terrified tone. Only it doesn't come out.
It doesn't take me long to realize I'm not in control, I'm in a memory.

"I prefer Katie." I actually reply.

I'm talking directly to Gideon.

"Katie. Why do you want to join us? I don't know if you noticed or not, you were the only female to step up."

I nod my head

"Yes I know. My reasoning is confidential, you respect that I assume?"

This causes Gideon to chuckle

"Oh yes. miss Katie, we welcome you with open arms of course."

A burning pain races through my body, I feel like I'm on fire. My eyes open and I can see Gideon standing near the end of my bed, he's pacing. I opens my mouth, but before I can speak I'm pulled back into the darkness.

"Please don't make me change." I beg, my face is wet with tears.

"Katie you knew this was part of the deal, if you really want to be one of us you need full commit..."

"There has to be another way I can prove my loyalty." I interrupt.

"There might be."

I nod enthusiastically

"I'll do anything."

My eyes open again, this time to room is in full focus. Gideon is at the foot of my bed still

"Did you kill him?" I ask.

Gideon's eyes spring up and he jumps to my side

"Dylan is taken care of yes. Are you alright?"

I nod

"Am I a?" I can't say the word out loud, Please no.

Gideon shakes his head

"It was close, I think if your heart stopped again we would have."

My heart stopped. I almost died.

"The council has agreed to give you a week recovery time before the next candidate arrives." Gideon tells me.

"Okay." I don't fight, argue or disagree as much as I want to I just don't have the energy.
