Needing to be Wanted

Matt ran after Shiro getting the courage to confront him finding Shiro in the training hall facing the 'champion' Pidge talked about. Matt saw Shiro move swiftly eyes scanning receiving each blow blocking it. He moved in such a way that it almost looked painful. Shiro seemingly snaked around the robot and it's fury of attacks. Shiro's face lit up in a smirk and his feet shifted ever so slightly before delivering a few punches and round house kicking the robot in the side causing it to hit an invisible electrical field shorting out and falling before going through the floor.

Panting Shiro lowered his head chuckling slightly hearing the ship say the following words, "Training sequence master lever compleat." Sweat dripped from his bangs to the floor as he fell to his knees panting still. Holding himself up by his arms. Matt cane running over.

"You ok?" Matt asked concerned for Shiro. The paladin shrugged at the rebel and sat back finally getting enough breath to talk, still panting trying to regain his breath fully.
"Yah.... what's up?" Matt met his eyes knowing Shiro was telling the truth.

"I wanted to talk about earlier...." matt started but trailed off not finding the right words. Shiro only smiled waiting patiently his breathing calmed down. Matt looked at him trying to find the words before looking down, "I.... I.... uh....." this was more difficult than he originally thought. He sighed unsure of where to begin. Shiro only responded with a smile and forced Matt to look at him with his human hand. "Breathe... take your time. It doesn't have to be overly accurate. Keep it simple." Shiro's voice was calm as a stream and as sweet as honey, something Matt missed dearly.

Matt nodded and closed his eyes collecting his thoughts, "I don't know how to make myself useful." He started, "I mean I'm here free loading it feels like," he looked at Shiro, "I don't want to just be a waste of food." His eyes started to water a bit feeling like he was nothing, something he felt like when he was a slave. He hated it knowing how quickly he could die and no one would care.

"Something else is bothering you, what it is?" Shiro asked his hand moving to Matt's cheek. Matt flinched. "I won't hurt you. I promise." Shiro smiled, "Scouts Honor." Shiro saw matt smile a bit and snort softly in a stifled laugh before he took a shaky breath.

"I feel worthless. I know I'm not I just..... I can't help but feel that. I mean everyone else forms Voltron or does great things for the cause and I just sit there and code."

Shiro pulled his hand back thinking a bit muttering, "we do need a medic."

"I thought Coran does it."

Shiro shook his head, "I mean he does but he doesn't understand human biology like you would. It may be a bit out of your original demographic...." shiro trailed off in thought.

"So is piloting a giant mecha lion." Matt chimed in earning a laugh from Shiro, something that matt hasn't seen in a long time. Not genuine nor blood thirsty. A genuine human laugh, Matt smiled drinking in the image of Shiro's shaking shoulders the way his eyes closed and his head moved down with a smile plastered on his face. The way it shook his body in a thunderous rumble. Shiro finally getting a hold on himself before looking at Matt with the biggest smile, "That is also true." Shiro let out in a hum that made Matt's heart swell in pride.

"I can try," Matt offered.

"That's all I ever ask." Shiro smiled and stood up finally offering a hand to Matt who took it happily. "Come on let's tell Coran, he'd be happy to share how everything works. I know you'll catch on quickly." Matt smiled and nodded. "I'll be off checking in on Pidge and Hunk. If you need anything from me don't be afraid to ask as to my whereabouts or just let someone know that we need to meet up in the lounge."

"I'll do that." Matt smiled. Receiving a wink from Shiro as he led them to where Coran was, before biding him a farewell as he went off to do what he was doing. Matt felt wanted, needed, useful. He felt more human again. But he and Shiro both knew it wasn't that easy, however it was a start.
