*the next night came quickly and weighed heavily with the next day looming over it, it was a big day and so important that things went well, if it didn't, there could be no telling how massive the repercussions could be, when Ben walked into the bedroom hurriedly, rather late, that evening he found their bedroom empty, he walked into the nursery, expecting to find her there, but instead the lights were out and the twins were fast asleep, he quickly kissed each other then gently on the forehead and then left, wondering where exactly their mother could be, but then he had a thought, he couldn't decide if he'd be surprised or the complete opposite to find her there as he went down the hall a few doors to a room he himself hadn't been in for a few years now, he opened the door and wandered in to find a view that made him feel as though he'd stepped back in time instead of simply through a door to a room in a castle, he moved forward slowly, careful not to startle her, and a few moments later was stood beside her as continued to watch the outside world through the massive windows which took up the entire top half of an entire wall in the room, she didn't even turn to look at him as he wrapped his arm around her waist, kissed her cheek and then rested his chin upon her shoulder*
Ben: hey
*for quite a few moments there was silence in the room until Mal finally responded*
Mal: hi
Ben: I haven't found you in here for a while, have I just not been looking in the right places or....?
Mal: it's been a while since I've been in here
Ben: I'm sorry I was too late to put the twins down with you
Mal: it's fine, I figured there'd be a lot of work to get done before tomorrow
Ben: so what's going on? What's wrong?
Mal: how do you know there's something wrong?
Ben: well when I find you ominously staring out the window in the room you used to go to when you were upset or stressed, it does lead one to consider, even when one is as oblivious as me
Mal: you're not oblivious
Ben: that's highly debatable
Mal: I was just thinking
Ben: this place always did seem calming to you, just watching the world go by for a while, it always seemed to help keep you grounded
Mal: you calmed me, you kept me grounded, it was standing here with you that helped me
Ben: well I'm here now
Mal: what if this all goes wrong? What if we've argued for this and then they do something to ruin it
Ben: I know we can't trust them Mal, but we couldn't trust you guys any more than we could trust them, it'll be safe, Uma has to surrender her powers to fairy godmother for at least the first few months, of not permanently and she agreed to do so, the rest of them have no magic, they won't be able to bring their swords with them, they'll be unarmed, there will be guards and it couldn't be any safer, they'll settle into life in Auradon and once we've given them time to do that we'll allow them more freedoms, this is going to work, I really think it will
Mal: I wish I had your confidence
Ben: maybe it's the ignorance, they do say it's bliss
Mal: what do you mean?
Ben: I don't know what they've done on the isle, I know very little about these kids, it makes it easier to believe they'll give this a good chance, you know them better, you know them much better than I could possibly, you know things that will affect how easy it is for you to believe they could change, but you changed, I think that's a good indication that they can too
Mal: is this how you felt, the first time you tried to do something like this?
Ben: the first time I tried to be king, when I got to deal with my first real problem just before my coronation? Oh yeah that went badly
Mal: I'm sure it didn't
Ben: I stood on a table
Mal: you what?
Ben: in front of the entire council and all of the representatives do the sidekicks league, I stood on the table and I yelled and good lord it was the most cringey thing I've ever done, and that's saying something
Mal: why would you stand on a table?!
Ben: they weren't listening to me, I didn't know what else to do
Mal: a table?
Ben: yep, pretty much
Mal: you're so making that up
Ben: I am not, seriously, I'm really not
Mal: oh god, how on earth does your mind think, hmmm, what shall I do now? Oh I know, STAND ON A TABLE!
Ben: very good question, I lack an answer
*by this point both were laughing and in significantly better spirits than they had been before, suddenly the next day seemed much easier for Mal to deal with and Ben was happy that she seemed happier, all he ever really needed was that*
Mal: how do you always know what to do to fix things?
Ben: I don't
Mal: but you do, you always make everything better
Ben: I almost never know what to do, the words tend to just fall out of my mouth and I just hope they're helpful ones? Or I just kind of stand there and hope for glory? You know, for the five and a half months I knew you were pregnant, I had ABSOLUTELY no idea what on earth to say, everything was a mess and I was just like okayyyyy sooo?
Mal: you just always seem to do the right thing, I want to be able to do that for you
Ben: just having you here makes everything perfect for me
Mal: of all hell breaks loose tomorrow...
Ben: I'll protect you with my ceremonial sword
Mal: okay I have two things to say to that, one; that's one hell of an innuendo and two; YOU HAVE ONE OF THOSE?!
Ben: I was joking...but yes I do
Mal: come on, we should get to bed while we've still got a chance at actually sleeping, give it three hours and we'll have two screaming babies to worry about instead of Uma and her crew
Ben: I swear they get this from you, by all accounts I was a lovely child
Mal: what happened to that?
Ben: only slightly offended
Mal: what would I do without you?
Ben: I imagine, a lot of things
Mal: come onnnn———————————————————
