Toby's POV
She came back in about 5 minutes later, her eyes red and puffy. Jonathan was nowhere to be seen. I tried to stand but my leg prohibited it.
"Ella! Are you okay? Did he hurt you?" I asked frantically.
"No he didn't hurt me. Not physically at least." she replied, sitting down beside me.
She rested her head on my shoulder and we sat there. I didn't try to push for any more information, I just let her cry. After a little while, Ella sat up and scoffed.
"I thought he loved me, Toby." she said, "I thought I loved him."
She pulled the diamond ring off of her finger and threw it angrily across the store.
"Dude, you could have sold that." I joked causing her to giggle a little through the tears.
"Hey, it's okay." I said, wrapping my arm around her. "He didn't deserve you anyway."
Ella smiled up at me, "Thanks."
"No problem. I mean you did do this," I said motioning to my leg, "How did you learn medical stuff?"
"My mom was a nurse. She would always go overboard when me or my brother got hurt." she laughed a little at the memory, "Even if we just had a scraped knee she'd wrap it up in 6 layers of bandage."
"Well I think I'll be fine. The knife didn't go too deep." I said, lowering my voice to a whisper, "He can't throw very hard."
Ella just gave a sad laugh and rose up.
"How long have we been gone?" she asked.
I checked my watch and said "Almost an hour and a half. We'd better get back to the house. They'll start to worry."
I placed my hands on the ground and attempted to push myself up. I was embarrassed by my failure to do so. Every time I put a lot of weight on my leg it hurt like heck.
"Can you get up?" Ella asked.
I sighed and shook my head. She just turned and walked somewhere in the store and returned with a cane, handing it to me.
I held it firmly in my hand and after a few tries (and Ella's help) I got up.
I hunched my back over and spoke in my old man voice, "Let's go back to the ol' home."
Ella laughed, "Okay but wait just a minute, we need the bread, sodas and milk."
"What? What did you say young lady? Lead, cobras, and silk? Why do you need those things?" I joked still in character.
She stuck her tongue out at me and left to return with the items in her hands.
"No you have to get almond milk." I told her, returning to my normal voice, and pointing at the jug of milk, "I'm Lactose Intolerant."
"That sucks for you." she called as she switched the milks.
"It's not too bad. What really sucks is being allergic to cats. I work on the internet and I can't play with cats. That's messed up." I said, quoting my 'Allergy Rant'.
Ella laughed and we walked outside into the heat of the sun.
