In the near future, robot technology has advanced to the point of self-awareness. Under the leadership of the "Black King," machines have decimated the human population and conquered the world. Those who survived the early holocaust have been enslaved for life. But throughout the hardships, a lone hero appears as the savior of mankind. He is Casshan - a fusion of man and machine driven to combat Black King and his forces to the end.

Casshan began his life as Tetsuya Azuma, the son of Kotaro and Midori Azuma. The former of his two parents was a scientist who turned Tetsuya into Casshan after Kotaro successfully revived Tetsuya's dog Lucky into a robot dog named Friender when Tetsuya volunteered to be turned into a neo human, despite the objection of his mother and father. Tetsuya volunteered to become Casshan due to another one of Kotaro's creations, Black King activated on his own and set out to conquer the world. In the 1993/1995 OVA remake, Kotaro and Midori are killed by Black King.

Braiking Boss is the leader of the renegade robot army threatening to conquer the world. He faces the combined forces of Casshern, Luna, and Friender in combat.
In Casshern: Robot Hunter:
Braiking Boss is the leader of the NEOROIDS that have taken over Earth. Casshern wages a solitary war on the NEOROIDS. Ironically Cassherns father created both Casshern and the NEOROIDS.
In Casshern Sins:
An enigmatic and scary man from Casshern's past, Braiking Boss once was the leader of robot army and commander of Casshern.
Spoiler:
Hundreds of years ago, Braiking Boss was a person who held the whole humanity under his iron-clad rule. Robots reigned over humans till the moment when humans summoned Luna, a messiah and savior of humanity. Braiking Boss, fearing his own demise and humanity's revolt, orders his three best soldiers to find and kill Luna.
After the world destruction, Braiking Boss changes his name and is now wandering in the wilderness, tracking and following casshern. He is responsible for the ruin of the world, and the only thing he has left to wish for is to "settle the score" with Casshern.

Friender "Lucky"
Originally Tetsuya's pet dog Lucky, its data was used to revive it as Friender after it was killed. In order to support Casshern, he can transform into a jet, submarine, tank, or a motorcycle, and is even able to breathe flames. Friender is a brave robotic dog capable of standing up to the Andro Army alone.
A robot dog who stayed with a robot community that peacefully accepted the idea of death, Friender himself does not display any signs of deterioration. After Casshern destroys the entire community after going berserk, he cautiously follows him, eventually trusting him. He primarily intervenes to stop Casshern whenever he goes berserk.

Near the end of the anime, only he stayed alive, playing with Ringo.

Luna Kozuki is the daughter of Dr. Kozuki, who fights along Casshan and Friender and uses a firearm called an MF Gun, and is also the love interest of Casshan/Tetsuya.
