The Cage

I tap on the glass that surrounds me.

As people mindlessly walk in and out,

I sit and watch.

Watching their expressions,

Their body language.

None of them want to be here.

But here they are.

They're trapped in an endless loop,

Forever walking in and out of existence.

As if to mock me.

They can walk in and out,

But I am trapped.

Trapped on the other side of the glass,

Only to watch them suffer.

Not able to help.

I sit and watch because that's the only thing I can do.

The heat of the room surrounds me,

Slowly suffocating me.

I feel my lungs burning, my throat burning.

I try to make a sound but I can't scream.

The silence I once heard

Turned into ear piercing screams.

But the sound doesn't come from me,

It comes from them.

They think they are the ones trapped.

But I am the one who is truly held captive.

Their shouts, shrieks, and screams

Crack my cage of glass,

And as their screams get louder,

My cage diminishes more.

Until the glass around me finally shatters.

Their screams saved me from my prison,

But I have not saved them from theirs.
