Elena returned home from the hospital. Elijah walked in and greeted her warmly. Elena waved a little at him and her phone rang. As she got it out of the bag, Elijah said-
"Please, Elena, can we have one night just us?!"
Elena shook her head and took the call. A few seconds later, she took her bag and said-"I have to go back to the hospital."
"This is unbelievable."- Elijah said-" You just got in."
"I am sorry, but - I got to go."
"You might as well be married to the hospital."- Elijah suddenly exploded.
"What does that mean?"- Elena shot back.
"It means that I don't see you anymore- it's hello-goodbye. You get in, you sleep and it's back there. When did we last had dinner together - gone on vacation- "
"I can't believe this! You knew what it is going to be like. I am a Cardiac surgeon. And a woman. You know how tough it is to be a woman and a surgeon, and a young one at that. To get somewhere you just got to be in it - all the time - it's not office work."
"I never said it was. And don't tell me that I don't understand. I have been there, by your side, all the way, or didn't I? But - the last year or so - "
"Please- now you are exaggerating!"- Elena screamed back cutting in-"I haven't got time for this."- Elena dismissed it and walked out of the apartment.
Days after they hardly spoke or seen one another. It was like they fell into a proverbial pit. Elijah met Hayley and let himself get carried away with her.
And so, as Elena got home from the hospital one evening, a few weeks after Elijah now said-
"Oh, good. You're home. We got to talk."
"I am really tired - can we do this in the morning?"- Elena passed by Elijah and went into the kitchen.
Elijah followed her in -
"We can't go on like this."
"Please, not again. I had a nightmare of a day."- Elena took a bottle of water from the fridge.
Elijah sighed a little and then said-
"I think - we should - separate"
Elena felt like someone had slapped her over the face.
"You want that?"- Elena said.
"No, Elena. I don't want that. I want us to - find a way back to US- you and me - like we were"- Elijah said- " having alone time- just us- laugh, have fun. Go on a casual date out- remember casual date out? Your invention. Remember when you shut the Anatomy book and called me and said - it's casual date night. You and me and me and you. No books, no phones- nobody - just us. I love you" - Elijah now said.
"You love me? But you have no problem suggesting separation"
"Do you love me?"- Elijah now said.
"I can't believe you are asking me this?!"-
"I don't know if you do or you don't. I don't know anything. We don't talk anymore like we used to do. I don't want to lose you, but I think that I have- well, we lost one another - Elena"- Elijah now got very serious-"I got to tell you something-"
"Don't- don't say anything anymore. Just - don't want to know."- Elena got out of the kitchen and in the bedroom, now crying. She put a few things in her bag.
"What are doing?"- Elijah asked as he followed her into the room.
"What does it look like? Separating!"
"Elena, please don't! I didn't mean it like that."
"You do. I saw it in your eyes. You want out. It is fine. Out you will get."
Elijah now sat down on the bed.
