Elena worked and slept in the hospital. She appeared to be switched off and only concentrated at work, but her heart was not switched off and concentrated on Elijah and the point their relationship got to.
Her shift finished and she now went to the cafe across the road from it.
As she asked for coffee and some breakfast, she put her phone on. Endless message now popped up in notifications. Mostly voicemails from Elijah.
She knew that he came to the hospital as well, but she didn't want to see him.
Elena now played the voicemails-
"Since I left you, I have been constantly depressed. My happiness is to be near you. Incessantly I live over in my memory your caresses, your tears, your affectionate solicitude. The charms of the incomparable Elena kindle continually a burning and a glowing flame in my heart. When, free from all solicitude, all harassing care, shall I be able to pass all my time with you, having only to love you, and to think only of the happiness of so saying, and of proving it to you?"
Elena now remembered Elijah writing this to her after he had left for a conference after their second date.
This now brought memories of all their time together. Especially their first dates. They were so in love, nothing mattered but them. And they swore always and forever to one another.
Elena now put her phone into her bag, not listening to other voicemails of his.
And she went to the apartment. Elijah was there and stood taken in as Elena got in and just went to him and kissed him

"Elena?"- Elijah slipped as they pulled a bit out of the kiss.
"I want to find us again- don't want to separate"
"Me neither. I love you. Sorry for saying that I want to separate."
"Shhh"- Elena now said

Shooting forward
A day after Elijah was operated.
"Elijah has slipped in coma."- Stefan explained to Elena as she came after she had a call late in the night.
'Coma?"- Elena said feeling like she was kicked in the guts.
"Yes. He regained conciousness. But - a few minutes after he had a relapse"- Stefan explained.
"OMG. This is not happening -"- Elena was in slight state of shock.
"I am sorry."- Stefan now said.
Elena didn't want to speak. She just passed by her friend and colleague and went to the ICU room to her husband.
Seeing him lay there in the state he was made her think of how life could change from one minute to the next. About the good, the bad, mistakes one makes that in turn could cost them dearly. She wished they could turn back time. But this could not be done.
So many times as she visited Elijah as he was in his vegetation state, she thought of that. How easily things in life slip. How things were taken for granted. It's about give and take. From both sides.
When she found that she was pregnant a month after his operation, she made a promise to herself, the baby she was carrying and Elijah that they as a family will always come first. Work was important, but not all.
Now it was about the future and hope that one day they would be given a chance to be together again.

The night before their daughter Dylan's first birthday
Elena placed a little kiss on Elijah's lips. Then caressed his face a bit.
"I am having a little party tomorrow for Dylan. It would be so good if you would wake up and we celebrate it all together. Come on,we love you.

Now in the bedroom, Elena's phone rang and she now answered it without looking at the caller.
"Hello?"
"Dr Mikaelson"- the attending doctor now said.
"Yes?"- Elena said. Her heart stopped a beat as she now heard these words-
