We'd driven a few miles by now and I was beginning to dose off, watching various buildings and lights pass my vision. I don't want to be here. I can feel Calum glance at me every so often, checking if I've fallen asleep or not. I still don't trust him. I've seen who he is.
"Are you tired?" He asks, interrupting me from my thoughts. I don't reply shifting my body to the door. He sighs and pulls over in front of a Waffle House turning the car off. "You need some food." I open my mouth to protest but he silences me as he exits the vehicle. I get out, clutching my bag to my chest. He locks the doors of his black chevelle. He walks to the doors as I trudge along, looking hesitantly at my surroundings.Once we are seated inside, I watch the quiet buzz among others. Families celebrating and grandparents spending time with their grandchildren. I feel a ping of despair in my chest. I've never really had a family. I've only ever known Margaret and Alex and I know they weren't my parents. They were my protectors. We never did things like this. I was their trainee. This young soul the had to raise and show whats right and wrong. I sigh, sinking into my seat and blocking out excess noises.
"No no no. Victoria you're not holding the gun correctly." Alex sighs as he takes the gun from my hands.
"Alex.. I don't want to do this! I'm only 9! I just want to be a kid." I huff and sit on the floor, looking down. He kneels in front of me.
"Victoria.. You cant be a kid.. Ever. I know its sad but you are in danger. You always will be.""Hi welcome to Waffle House! I'm your waitress Monique. What can I get you two to drink?" My thoughts are interrupted and I blink quickly.
"Can I just have a tea please?" I ask, wishing I wasn't here. Wishing I had a real life.
"I would like a hot cocoa please." Calum says, smiling at her and picking up the menu as she leaves. I look through my menu, deciding on the cheapest meal and set it down.
"You already decided?" He questions me, his eyebrow raised. I nod and look around. He watches me for a moment then sighs.
"I'm gonna go to the restroom." I say standing up.Once I'm in the restroom I lean against the counter and take a deep breath. I watch myself in the mirror, my brown eyes looking across my body. I'm not human. That's all I can hear. Its screaming, refusing to be silenced.
"Why is this happening to me." I sigh and sink against the wall. I cant control my hand as I move it slowly towards the jack. Tracing it, I close my eyes I cant believe any of this. I stand up and clutch my bag tightly, forcing myself to take deep breaths. I stand and splash cool water on my face. I take a deep breath and leave the bathroom, clutching the side of my shirt."Hows the burger?" Calum asks me, picking up a fry and dipping it in the bright red pile of ketchup upon his plate.
"Its good I guess." I respond, setting it down. He eats the fry watching me.
"Look, I know you don't want to be here, or anywhere, with me. But I'm going to help you. I promise you that." I ignore him as he says this, stirring my straw in my drink. He sighs and rests his hand on mine, before he quickly pulls it off.
"Sorry." He mumbles, looking down at his plate.
"I'm gonna go wait on the car." I say, scooting off of the bench and walking towards the door.
