I met him near a pond. We were both young, around nine. He was sitting in a patch of sunlight at the water's edge and laughing at the tiny ripples in his reflection. His dark hair occasionally un-tucking itself from behind his ears and blocking his vision. He lay down and stared up at the grey clouds that perfectly reflected his eyes, discussing the shapes and designs to his imaginary friends.
I watched from my tree, afraid of making any noise that could disturb his daydreams. I had almost jumped down to say hello, but he seemed so blissfully happy in his own world and I didn't want to ruin that with my scars and rude habits. Mother tells me I'm the opposite of rude, but really, who could enjoy talking to me? Kids are afraid of my face and avoid me anyway, that has to count for something.
The dark haired boy stood up and started to walk around, looking for large trees with low hanging branches. Just like the one I was in. I closed my eyes, held my breath and hoped he wouldn't notice my tree; I stayed like this for about seven minutes until I felt a light tap on my shoulder.
"Hey," He smiled and grabbed my arm "I'm Sirius!"
Instead of replying I let go of my branch and fell out of the tree, my tree... Or maybe it was his tree now? All I know is that he was still holding onto me when I started to plummet towards the soft ground.
"Are you okay?!" The boy asked, he was crawling off of me and trying to help me sit up.
"I-I'm fine," I squeaked, stumbling over my words, my face was red as a beet.
"Oh, did I scare you?" he started to smirk, part of his lip turning up and quickly changing his entire demeanor from concerned to caricaturist in one subtle motion.
I'm in trouble...
"Why?" The boy pouted "What's wrong?" Did I say that last part out loud?
"Um... I'm in trouble... W-with my mum for, um, breaking a w-window?" I grasped at weak strings in an attempt to weave a believable lie. "I'm... not supposed to be outside!"
"Oh, okay?" He frowned, "I guess I'll see you around?"
"Yea-actually, I don't know?" I blushed, I completely forgot! "I'm only here 'cause my aunt lives down the street, we're leaving tomorrow,"
"Well," He said, contemplating the situation, his dark brows furrowed together. "If you're already outside, it wouldn't hurt to stay five more minutes! Pleeeasee?!"
"Okay, I guess" I said, I couldn't figure out a way to get out of this, and I didn't want to seem rude!
He-Sirius took my hand and started guiding me over to another clearing "Cool! You have to see this log I found! There's like, a million bugs and a few newts under it! By the way, what's your name?"
"Oh, um, I'm-"
"Sirius Orion Black! Where are you?!" An ear piercing scream rang through the small woods, causing a large flock of crows to fly out of the treetops.
"That's my mum!" Sirius said a nervous edge to his voice "I have to go!"
"Remus," I mumbled as he left my line of vision "My name's Remus Lupin"
