I looked at the brown gazebo in-front of me. Comics littered the floor of the gazebo. I sighed, walking into it and cleaning up the different comics. I put them neatly in the box that Toby made for them. "You didn't have to do that, I was getting to it." I shook my head turning around to see Carl smiling. "When, next year? You know how angry Michonne gets when you leave them out." I set the box underneath the tiny table that was in between two chairs.
He scoffed, crossing his arms, the smile never left his face. "Right right."
I narrowed my eyes, "She already yelled at you, didn't she?"
"Perhaps." A tiny laugh left my mouth. "It's not funny Tessa." "You're right, it's hilarious."
He narrowed his eye at me, "Fuck off." "Clean up after yourself, Grimes." I waved my finger at him, walking past him, towards the archway and only exit of the gazebo. His hand outreaches in front of me. I looked at him, I studied the side of his face. "Stay? Read some comics with me?." He asked. "I snatched Michonne's MP3 player before she left with the guard today."
A smile began to creep its way onto my face. "She's going to be bored as hell." He smiled, "Soo is that a yes?"
"I suppose, I didn't really have anything to do today." I move backwards into the gazebo again. He watched me. I sat in the white chair, grabbing the box of comics from underneath the table and putting them on top of the table. His smile never faded. He sat on the floor in front of me, he back pressed against my legs.
This is what we usually do while hanging out. He grabs a tiny speaker from the drawer of the table, plugging Michonne's MP3 player into it. Our usual song plays, At the Bottom of Everything. I hear Carl hum along to it. I flip through the pages of the comic. We have read all of these. At least twenty times. But it never got boring, surprisingly. Maybe it was because I could never get bored with being with him. He continues to hum the song until the very end.
I listen. Never taking my eyes off of the page.
"Tessa?" Carl asked, his voice sounded nervous. "Hm?" I hummed in reply.
"Never mind." He nervously chucked, setting his comic book. "Obviously it was something." I close my comic book, "What's wrong?"
"I just realized my dad needed me around this time. I'll see you at home." He set the comic book into the box. Quickly walking away from the gazebo.
The only thing odd about this whole thing was the fact that Daryl and Rick were out looking for supplies. I look down and unplugged the MP3 Player out of the tiny radio speaker that Glenn found for us.
I walked back to the house. I open and closed the door swiftly, making sure not to be heard. I set the MP3 player onto Michonne's dresser in her room.
I walk in Judy's room to see she's sleeping away in her crib. I leave the door opened and walk to Carl's room, knocking.
No response.
I open the door, my eyes widened, "Jesus fuck!" I yelled, "Oh my-" I squeaked closing my eyes. My hands covering my face. I heard a gasp. "Fuck, Tess." I heard the bed springs, someone was getting up.
"I was gonna use your bathroom to shower but I see that you two are very, uh, busy." I cleared my throat. At first I was traumatized but then it turned to anger and jealousy. He and Enid were in the middle of something.
"Tess-" "I'll just shower later." I slowly backed away, bumping into the dresser on my way out. I slammed the bedroom door shut. Uncovering my eyes I went down the stairs and sat on the couch or as I know it as, my bed. I hugged my knees.
Not even a few seconds later, Enid was out the front door and Carl stood in the arch way of the living room. "I'm sorry, Tessa."
"No need to apologize. But next time if you wanna leave all you gotta do is not lie to me." I said.
"It's not th-"
I looked at him. "Just say you gotta go, next time, okay?"
"Okay." He said quietly. He sat next to me. "I'm still sorry you had to see that."
"There's worse I could've seen." I looked at him. His arm rested behind me, like usual. But it didn't feel like usual. It felt different. He just looked at me. Leaning.
His other hand rested on my cheek.
"Waaah!" Judith wailed out.
I quickly jumped up. "Oh wow."
He looked down. "I- Sorry."
"I um." I walked up the stairs and into Judy's room. I cradled her as she cried. Her crying died down. And she fell back to sleep.
The door downstairs slammed shut.
