They both to locked eyes.
Her teal ones, staring into his crimson red ones.
"So who's taking it?" Rouge said softly. "I honestly want you to though." She said, taking a deep breath.
"How about you take it. I've had enough trauma." He said.
From no where, Eggman's voice flooded the room.
"At last, the final decision!" He said. It sounded like he was having the time of his life.
Shadow and Rouge both looked up, trying to decipher where the noise was coming from.
"I think I forgot to mention, this is Rouge's test. Will either of you be loyal, or betray your friend?"
The white bat turned pink.
"The poison is on its way, so I'd suggest you make up your minds. That's all I wanted to say. Peace out!" He said, as his laugh faded away.
"So..." Rouge said, becoming suddenly fidgety.
They bickered for a few more minutes when Shadow sensed something. His senses told him something was off, and wrong.
"Rouge-"
"Don't interrupt me!" She said angrily, stomping her foot. Inside though, she was trembling with fear. Fear for her future, fear of what was to happen to her.
"The gas." He said, nodding towards the entrance to the cave.
Her eyes widened in understanding. "Shadow! We have to choose now!" She said quickly, fear taking over. Eggman had been right.
"How about together...?" He said, softly. The fifty, fifty may be just be his ticket out.
She slowly nodded.
The stood next to each other, and counted down.
"3,"
"2,"
Rouge could see the gas approaching, closer than it has been before.
Before they could say "3", Rouge shoved Shadow to the side, snatched the emerald, and kicked him in the shins for a good measure. He cried out in surprise and agony. And collapsed onto the ground, not wanting to take in the sudden reality. Tears welled into his eyes. He could hear Rouge burst into tears finally, screaming how sorry she was.
"CHAOS CONTROL!" She hoarsely screamed. He could see the drops dripping off her face. Shadow quickly stood up, and attempted to lunge at her. But he was too late. A bright flash blinded him for a split second, before she warped away into nothingness. He fell into the grass, and began to silently cry. He should have just let go of her earlier, while flying, to avoid the grief and betrayal. The gas began to seep over to him. There was no escape.
He fought the poison with his high immune system, but it began to burn. His lungs became very hot, and itchy almost. Shadow just cried even harder as he slowly lost control of his limbs. First his fingers, then arms, legs, and now just barley he could move his eyes and mouth. He stopped sulking and watched his life flash before him. He smiled one last time.
"I forgive you." He said, barely audible, and to no one in particular.
Eggman watched through the cameras, pleased. He became a bit guilty later. Shadow had forgiven him. And whoever else he'd planned on to forgive.
Rouge's heart raced as she glided through the air, her branded wing making the task even more difficult. Rouge slowly reached a hill, and let the rest happen. She was finally free. The gusts of wind, the smell, the scenery, it all flooded back with joyful memories with her friends—
The ones that she'd betrayed.
She stood there, still clutching the emerald. And began to weep. For those she'd helplessly watch die. For those that she could have prevented. For Shadow. Her heart stung with guilt.
The whole time, she had kept her composure, minus the very end. She needed though to fulfill Sonic's wish.
She started down towards Vanilla and Creams' cottage. She heard someone excitedly yell,
"EVERYONE! ROUGE HAS RETURNED!"
She looked up. Charmy was buzzing around giddily. He smiled, but it was quickly replaced with a distressed look.
Every mobain in the town gathered around her.
"What happened to you..?"
"Where are the others?"
"What's with the wing?"
"Is Mr. Sonic ok?"
"Where's Eggman?!"
She took a seat on a park bench, and told the story. By the time she finished she was in hysterics, clutching the chaos emerald.
They all looked at her.
"You all hate me now." She said bluntly.
"Not at all. You were so brave..." someone said. Agreeing murmurs followed. Rouge truly smiled for the first time in days. "Thank you." She said softly.
An odd robot zoomed atop of the people projecting something. Everyone looked up, in confusion.
Shadow laid on the grass in the cave, shaking, and twitching. Rouge sat, absolutely frozen. He choked, coughed, and cried. Everyone around her began to get extremely worried. Suddenly, Shadow's head moved and you could hear him whisper, "I forgive you.". Rouge was speechless.
Did Eggman feel remorse? Regret? Guilt?
None of the less,
Shadow forgave me...
She thought restlessly.
Her thoughts could be finally put at ease. Her friends were in a good place now. She smiled broadly, laughing, and leaned back.
