I walked down my stairs that night with my heart as heavy as an iron.
Every step I took, it felt like my heart dropped down an inch further.
Everything seemed in slow motion, my trembling hands, every step I took, my mother calling my name.
"Sophie? Are you coming with me to Ava's house?" My mum smiled at me, and although I heard the words, I couldn't focus on them. They seemed to float up out of her mouth towards my ear; they just didn't go through.
"Soph?" She carried on rifling through her purse until she realised that I wasn't answering or moving. "Sophie? Are you ok?" She stared at me so intently that it seemed to snap me out of the stupor I was in.
"Oh, sorry mum. I must've .... Been in a world of my own." I let out an awkward laugh, and nervously glanced at my mum, she didn't look convinced.
I hopped down the steps with a smile plastered on my face. I kissed her on the cheek and said "Let me just run upstairs and grab my bag, then we can go."
And then I ran back up to my room, grabbed my over the shoulder bag that matched my green skater dress and then paused and stared at the DVD in my hand.
I have to do this.
I have to get rid of her.
I have to have Peter for myself.
So I stuffed it in my bag and headed back downstairs without a second thought.
My mum and I walked across the green between the two houses together; her nattering on about something some guy at work said, until we got to their door.
Ava answered the door before we even reached the steps leading to her porch.
"Oh I've been waiting for you! I haven't started dishing up dinner yet so don't worry, you haven't missed a thing." She embraced us both together and lead us into the dining table whilst taking our jackets off of us.
I sat at the table with my mum to my left and then noticed that I had some very unwelcome faces opposite me.
The lovely Pepper and her stupidly gorgeous boyfriend.
"Hey Soph! How're you?" Peter said as he came in and walked round the table to give me a hug.
"Hey! I'm great thank you." I lied and hugged him back.
"Hey ... Sophie." Pepper snarled at me.
Oh I'd missed her beautiful face ...
"Hi." I muttered and sat back down in my seat facing the door.
Josh sauntered in the room in his usual fashion aka, big cocky grin on his face.
But once again, he was dressed really, really well! With a plain white tee and blue jeans.
Dayuuummmm ........... Focus.
After dinner we all went into the sitting room and my mum and Ava went into the kitchen for some 'women time' - whatever that means!
I sat on the sofa and Peter plonked himself down next to me.
"So Soph ... long time no talk! How you been?" I sighed. He's such a nice boy. Could I really do this to him?
Treat 'em mean. Keep 'em keen.
More like treat them horribly and they're going to leave you.
I just stared at Peter for a while and then ran off upstairs, barely holding back the tears that threatened to escape.
I had just made it to the bathroom when a hand grabbed my arm and shut the door behind us.
It was Josh.
"Josh, I can't do it, I can't. It's not me, it's not who I am, I honestly can't bring myself to do it. I'm ... I'm sorry." And then the tears came flooding down my face as if someone had opened a floodgate.
Josh helped me and we sat on the bathroom floor for quite a while.
"Ok Sophie. That thing I was going to tell you the other day to wipe away any doubts you had, I think you should know what it was." He paused, like he was deciding how to break it to me. "Basically, about a month ago, I went to Pepper's house to drop off some things that she'd left at our dads house a couple days before. Her mum was there and she told me some stuff that Pepper had share with her." He looked at my face for a while and then continued with, "She told me about how Pepper was so lucky to find a guy that accepts her ... and her baby."
My face dropped.
"What are you ... I don't understand Josh.... Did Peter get Pepper pregnant?!" I was so shocked and confused. Josh's story didn't make any sense.
"No. Pepper told Peter that she was pregnant was his baby. But Pepper's six months pregnant."
I shook my head in confusion.
"But she's only been with Peter for 3 months. Peter thinks it's his baby, and he's with her because of it."
