"Happy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday dear Sophie, Happy Birthday to you!"
I woke up to my mum singing this song whilst carrying a bright pink sponge cake with white butter cream icing smothered all over it and 18 silver candles stuck all over the top.
"Oh my goodness!" I gasped at the sight of it, "Did you make this yourself mum?"
My mum looked quite shy and then nodded her head slightly in a bashful kind of way.
"Oh it's beautiful! I love it!" I gushed.
"I know it's gorgeous, but trust me when I say, it doesn't taste as good as it looks!" my mum admitted, and looked slightly embarrassed!
"Oh mum don't worry about it! Honestly, I would've been the size of a house if I'd eaten it anyways!" We both laughed together and then she left my room to go downstairs and make me a banana loaf and chocolate chip pancakes ... My favourite foods.
I flung back my curtains ready to welcome the bright morning sun that was begging to be let into my room when I saw a very sullen looking Josh sitting in the middle of the tree.
I pushed open my window slowly and said to him, "Cheer up Chuck! It's my birthday."
He didn't look at me, or even seem startled that I was there he just simply replied, "That's why I'm out here." And then he raised out his arm towards me and held a white box with a blue ribbon around it, "I got it for you when we were going out and I was so excited to see your face when you opened it on your birthday." He still didn't face me, so I climbed out of my window and walked carefully acroos the tree branch towards him.
I took the present and sat it in my lap and then reached my hand up to the back of Josh's head and put my fingers in his hair, the way I used to do whenever he was upset, back when we were going out.
He sighed and closed his eyes, "I don't know why that always makes me feel better".
And then he finally looked at me with a smile, "Open it then." he urged.
I carefully held up the box and untied the ribbon. It was beautifully packaged (no doubt he'd had it wrapped by the person in the store) and I opened the lid of the white box to find the most beautiful, dainty little necklace ever.
It was a thin silver chain that led down to a silver heart outline, and inside the first heart was a second one, in gold, and inside that was a diamond.
My breath caught in my chest. This was the most beautiful piece of jewellery I'd ever been given.
"Oh my! Josh, I can't accept this, it must've cost an arm and a leg!" I started putting the lid back on the box, "Take it back plea-"
He cut me off, "I bought it for you, so I want you to have it." And then he kissed me.
It was only for a millisecond, and it took me a couple seconds to register that it had happened. The warm, soft familiarity that was Josh's lips against mine sent shivers down my spine and a small smile spread across my face. But it was over to quickly and he had jumped down the tree and was already heading back inside his house before I could find my words.
This summer has been so eventful.
I went back inside my room and headed downstairs to the kitchen where my mum had laid out the biggest pile of pancakes and numerous bowls of different fruit out for me.
I grabbed 3 pancakes and the bowl of pineapple and headed outside to the sun loungers.
My mum joined me with her pancakes and a cup of tea, "So what you gonna do today Soph? Any plans for your big day?"
