Green Mountain,
Golden, Colorado, USA
Stress had taken its toll on y/n. She was buried a mile deep in paper; all of her assignments piling up despite her futile attempt to keep pace. Everything seemed to be falling at once upon her shoulders.
Eventually someone breaks from out underneath all the pressure. Falling to their knees- when they finally crack.
Y/N stared at the paper before her on the desk. The AP Literature homework just stared back. Mockingly so. As if the words on the paper formed their own meaning of whatever in the hell it was. Telling her brain things just to confuse it.
It infuriated her.
She slammed her fist on the desk, making the paper jump up. She eyes her windows with irritation, the need to go outside preceded over all others. Even homework.
So in that moment, y/n decided to go outside and clear her mind. To leave her homework behind as if it wasn't even important. (Though it was)
She grabbed her red windbreaker, a black coat to go underneath, laced up her black converse, and donned her backpack. Quickly placing her sketchbook, pen bag, phone, an apple, and her headphones/charger all in.
Then she grabbed a hat, sunglasses, and her wallet -just in case.
Y/n's walk was long and chill. She walked leisurely, letting her mind wander through scenes of grey as she peered at the treeless mountain around her. Well, no completely treeless, but pretty close to.
Clouds gathered in the sky as a slight breeze grazed y/n's cheekbones, pricking her skin, the biting feeling peaceful as opposed to a hurtful one. All thoughts of homework, life, everything seemingly slipping away into the lulling landscape around her. For spring, the small buds of grass and yucca plants began to stretch to the sky. Yellow and dead limbs gaining the green color of life.
Y/n slipped her hands into her pockets and began the trek up a slight hill. The dirt soft and crumbly under her shoes as it sloughed away. Underneath, the stronger earth held together. Her heart beginning to beat slightly quicker at the incline of the hill. Her hot breath contrasting against the cold air.
So much for Spring, y/n thought. It doesn't even feel like Spring. It should just be winter with how much cold has been here.
She crested the hill and stood for a moment, her (color) hair shifting slightly with the returning breeze. The Clouds shifted again, and the subtle rays of sun that were peeking through suddenly obscured by darker clouds.
Y/n smiled to herself. She loved clouds and the way in which they just seemed to exist in the moment. Directed by the strong breath of wind in an unknown direction; not even knowing or caring that they drifted along.
Y/n wished her life could be that way. How much easier things would be-
Y/n's thoughts were interrupted by the sight of a strange object jutting from the ground a few feet away. Suddenly feeling curious, Y/n quickly walked over to the object. It was a rock or stone, and y/n loved rocks. Especially how they could come in all sorts of shapes, styles, lusters, and colors. This rock was dull and covered in dirt. A majority of it assuming to be encased by earth with only a small portion of color peeking out.
Reaching down, y/n wrapped her fingers around the piece jutting out of the solid earth. She pulled twice, but the darn thing wouldn't budge.
"Oh, come on", she grumbled, pulling harder till her fingertips began to feel a scraping of the thing against the pads of her fingers.
"Finally!" she yelled as the rock slipped roughly from the ground. It was covered in dirt, and looked worn and rough. One side was chipped and sharp, the side that she had seen, while the other was smooth. Only a few small rounded outlines marking the surface.
It looked like a mountain on a very tiny planet. The shape was incredibly particular. It looked as though is was something that would come straight out of Star Wars.
Y/n blew on it and dusted it off to try and get some of the grime off, yet it only smeared the dirt further, masking whatever was underneath.
With a frustrated huff, y/n took her backpack around her back and and opened it, taking out a water bottle. She then rinsed off the rock with the water, slowly displaying a sheen surface of vibrant red.
With wonder, she paused and looked at the small area she had exposed. The color was blood red under the overcast sky. It shone brightly, however, despite the darker color. Veins of lighter shades of red and white ran delicately through the rocks surface.
Rapidly so, y/n finished cleaning the rock and marveled at her work. The rock was stunning, for lack of a better word. The surface was so beautiful, and the side she thought was chipped was actually sharp points of crystals jutting from the half sphere below.
Water dripped from y/n's hands as she lifted the rock to the sky, tilting her head and squinting.
"Wow. I wonder what type of crystal this is?" Y/n said in a mumbled whisper. Her words slightly slurring together as she observed the wonder before her. Just as soon, the rock began to hum in her hands, making her jump back. The vibration was subtle, and y/n could barely feel it as the power began to soften.
"What in the-" y/n was saying just as the rock began to glow brightly, the color of the dark red illuminating y/n's face as she stared at the rock in surprise.
Her lips parted as if to say something, but before she could, the wind picked up around her. Whipping around, her hand clutched the rock tightly as she could. Her (y/color) hair shifting violently in the forceful air.
"Ok! This is definitely not a an ordinary stone!", y/n yelled against the moving air.
Her eyes squinted down at the rock, and y/n's eyes were met with a blinding light. She quickly re-shut her hand.
Ouch, she thought.
Suddenly, the light stopped. The wind stopped. Everything stopped.
Birds came to a halt in mid flight in the sky, as did the movement of the cars down far in the distance on the highway. Y/n turned around in panic. Everything was dead silent. Y/n could only hear the sound of her frantic breathing, hollow and echoing through the silent landscape. The sound of her beating heart so loud in her own hears, that it was the only thing that seemed to exist in the moment.
There was an abrupt noise that cracked the silence of the y/n's surrounding like an eggshell. It was brazing to the ears, harsh, and full of pitch. The waves reverberating inside y/n's ears. A light erupted, even brighter than before, from the stone in her hands. The vibrating atoms of the rock shaking in her fearful hands. The light took over y/n's vision, all in red. Everything in red.
The color red took over.
The next thing she knew, she was not on Green Mountain. She wasn't anywhere. When y/n cracked an eye open to peek at her surroundings. She was floating in a void the color of crimson.
The feeling of weightlessness was terrifying as nothing was there to support her. She felt no control. She was afraid. So, she closed her eyes again. The endless void carrying the sounds of whispers in ominous and distant tones.
Her eyes clenched tightly together as the tones of voice drifted past her face skin, and into her ears. Grazing them and tussling her hair slightly. Shivers ran down y/n's spine as she tried to escape the frightening presence of the voices. Her blood went cold as she felt the voices become louder. Louder and louder they yelled; echoing through the void forever.
Then everything promptly went silent.
