Here you go, Char.
This is gonna be long, rambly, and cover three things. Those three things will be: "locals", Tom Holland stans, and Stucky shippers.
1. So to start, let's begin with the "locals".
*note that by "locals" I mean people who are desperately trying to fit in and/or make things seem cool
I keep seeing these things on twitter like...
"Don't tell me you're a real Marvel fan after going to see Infinity War and then NOT show up for Ant Man and the Wasp."
I feel two ways about this. First:
How about this - DON'T tell me you're a real Marvel fan after seeing just Infinity War.
Second:
There are plenty of Marvel fans who just haven't seen and/or don't really care for Ant Man. Let me put it this way.
Just because someone doesn't like
a certain character doesn't make
them any less of a fan.I have a friend who just HATES Thor (ok but honestly, how???), but she's still a HUGE Marvel fan. You can dislike a character and still be a huge fan.
Don't assume someone's less of a fan than you just because they dislike the characters you like.
The next one I saw was this:
"@ the locals: don't pretend like Marvel is cool now that you've seen Infinity War. You literally bashed Marvel fans for being nerdy for years."
Ok this one I honestly agree with. Like why is it just now NOT nerdy anymore? Because you saw how immensely popular it is, went to see it, and *gasp*, decided it was good? So what? All these years we just needed the approval of hipsters to not be considered nerds any more? Hm.
But then the MINUTE we bring up comic books or anything you refer back to calling us nerds.
Spoiler alert: Marvel movies wouldn't exist without the comics. So.
2. Next, we have the Tom Holland stans...
Okay so this next one isn't really a tweet, but more so something I've been hearing.
I've been hearing a lot of people talking about Tom Holland. Yeah, that's pretty vague. I know.
All of the sudden Spider-Man is EVERYONE'S favorite character, including the locals.
Is it just because he's now being portrayed by an attractive young person who also happens to be British? In many cases, probably.
But unfortunately, that makes all of us who've always loved Spider-Man look like we're jumping on the bandwagon with all these newbies.
In all actuality, the newbies are jumping on OUR bandwagon.
I've always loved Spider-Man. I saw all of the Spider-Man movies, read a lot of the comics, and wanted to be him for halloween several times as a youngster much to my parents' disappointment (that's a story for another time).
And there's no denying that Tom Holland is the best Spider-Man yet. I'm not just saying that because he's a "cute british boy" (gags). I'm saying that because:
1. He plays a perfect Peter Parker, much better than Andrew or Tobey did
2. He makes a fanstastic Spider-Man (the other two did too ok cHiLl)
3. He did a lot of his own stunts
Not to mention he's a HUGE Spider-Man fan himself. So there's that.
But the fact that his gut wrenching improvised scene in Infinity War has now turned into a meme BECAUSE OF THESE LOCALS CLAIMING SPIDER-MAN IS THEIR FAVORITE really, really REALLY bothers me.
And to these locals I ask a few questions:
1. If Tom Holland was replaced for the next Spider-Man movie, would you still go see it?
2. Tell me again WHY Spider-Man is your favorite.
3. And lastly. Is it really the character you love? Or is it just the actor?
Tom Holland has brought a lot of attention to Marvel, some of it good and some of it obnoxious. But that's not his fault, and I am in no way blaming him for any of it.
3. And lastly... the Stucky shippers.
I'm throwing it out there right now: I HATE Stucky.
No. No. No.
Furst of all, it's not even canon. Steve and Bucky are best friends, that's literally it.
Why do people have to ship everyone now? Why can't we just appreciate on screen and on paper friendships without trying to turn them into "a thing"?
Why are so many relationships between characters desired to be romantic?
Just gonna throw this out there: most of the og Marvel fans were guys. I'm not saying that to be rude or sexist, I'm just stating the facts.
And spoiler alert: many guys don't "ship" people like girls do.
Let me put it to you this way: I have NEVER met another guy who actively ships people. And I've never met a male Stucky shipper.
Many girls are all about that tacky romance drama. Many guys are not. That's just how it is, and that's perfectly ok.
But anyway, Marvel began to attract more girls over the years. And with them came a select few Stucky shippers.
These shippers decided that Steve and Bucky couldn't possibly be just friends, right? Because omigawd any time someone lOoKs aT mE iT's IMMEDIATELY TRUE L0VE!!!!!1!1!!!
So are you trying to tell me that all best friends are in love, then? Because that's definitely false.
Alsoooo Steve is CLEARLY attracted to women and never showed even an inkling of interest in men. So.
But hey - here's a concept: let's try shipping friendships for a change, instead of just assuming that two people who are really close MUST be in love. Every. Single. Time.
That concludes this discussion. Perhaps I'll do a chapter on dumb ships soon. So if you want to, go ahead and comment your least favorite ships.
