changes part 2

chapter ten

The day had finally arrived where the three curtis boys would board the plane for new york. It was going to be pony's first time flying. Darry and soda could see he was a little nervous but weren't sure if it was for the flight or the appoinment.

"Everythings going to be ok baby" darry signed trying to calm him down. Pony gave him a small smile. "Now have you got everything you need" darry signed again. Pony nodded before running back in his room to grab some books to read.

When they arrived in new york they went straight to their hotel room. They settled in and because it was early, they decided to do a little bit of exploring. Mostly for pony's benefit tontry and calm him down some before his appointment the following day.

They grabbed a bite to eat and went on to watch a movie at a nearby theatre. Pony was in awe about the size of the theatre. Back in tulsa the theatre was no where near as big as the one they were sitting in. This one even had a huge balcony.

After all the events of the day and the flight, the three boys were so exhausted they all went straight to sleep.

Darry was the first one awake the next morning. "Rise and shine" he called getting soda's attention. Soda slowly woke up. He leaned over the bed he was sharing with pony and gently shook the young greaser awake.

They ate breakfast before grabbing a cab to the childrens hospital. When they arrived they were a little shocked to see how big the place was. They didn't even have a childrens hospital back home. They just had one hospital with a childrens ward at one end.

Darry walked up to the receptionist "excuse me, could you tell me where i might find dr atkins" he asked as politely as he could. "Sure hun, take the stairs to the third floor. Then follow the blue line to the ear, nose and throat clinic" she smiled pointing to the stairs.

They reached the third floor following the receptionist instructions. They entered a small waiting room. "Excuse me" darry spoke to another receptionist. She looked up at him. "My nephew has an appointment with dr atkins" darry explained. "Please take a seat sir, the dr will be with you shortly".

They sat and waited. Pony read while he waited. Soda began to tap his foot getting a little anxious. "Ponyboy curtis" an elder looking man called. Darry stood up. "Hello, i'm dr atkins" he said shaking darry and soda's hands. He looked at pony who had put his book away.

"Hello ponyboy, my name is dr atkins" he signed. "Hi" pony signed. The dr lead the three of them into an examination room. At first he just did everything a normal gp would do. Checked pony's temperature, listened to his heart and then took a look at pony's ears.

"Well i have some good news, the damage to ponyboy's ears isn't as bad as i would have thought. If its ok with you i would like to schedule ponyboy for surgery for the day after tomorrow. He'll need to be checked in today so we can keep an eye on his vitals" the dr spoke.

Soda helped pony settle into a ward,while darry went back to the hotel to grab a few things. Before he went back to the hospital he gave bobby a call. "Hey bobby, surgery is set for the day after tomorrow" darry spoke. "Thanks dar, i'll try and get there for when he wakes up" bobby answered. "Give him a hug from me and tell him i love him" bobby said before hanging up.
