A Race To Remember

Now that I've filled you in on how I got to cabin three, let's fast forward to the present day. I'm nineteen now, pretty skilled with a sword and bow and arrow and quite in control of my abilities. A couple years back another poseidon kid showed up, Tyler's his name. He's an alright kid, Nat certainly warmed up to him faster than she did me. Oh well. I think I'm missing the point. Today we're having one of our annual chariot races, you work in pairs. A lot of pairings are usually siblings, you do have a choice, but I guess some things just work out like that.

Dynemia and I are on a team together, Nat's a bit jealous but Tyler and Darren keep her under control. Darren's a pretty nice guy, actually, he's a child of Hecate. You don't get that when you first meet him though, he's a bit arrogant and definitely more sarcastic than you'd expect. He's Nat's best friend, their sarcastic ways match up, they can balance each other out. Anyway, Dy and I have gotten a lot closer over the years, I think we both like being friends with at least one of our siblings. Its refreshing, you know? Alright, back to the chariot races. Chariot races are a game held at camp every now and then, terribly dangerous but we are the children of gods. There are two horses per chariot, although the horses can vary. Hades and Ares kids go for the skeleton horses, they think it scares the competition. If you didn't know, Poseidon created horses, so Dy and I are comfortable with any horse, although we do have a soft spot for pegasi. One of the pair act as the driver and one protects the chariot from other teams, while trying to take out other teams. There's no rules. What? I told you it was dangerous.

Dy and I take turns at the different roles, although offence is my stronger area. Not only am I good with battle strategy, but I spent enough time in the Hermes cabin with Flora to be able to pull off sneaky tricks. Funnily enough, this game was my turn as the protector, so it's obvious I'm excited. Well, everyone was excited. You could tell by the buzz at breakfast that morning. Natalie was in the middle of telling a joke at the Poseidon table when Chiron caught everyone's attention, his voice traveling across the grounds.

"Alright campers, as you know today is our annual chariot race" that comment, brought about a few cheers, one of them coming from me, but we all knew he wasn't finished yet. As we settled down he continued.

"Today we have a very special guest, as you know the huntress' of Artemis have been away for awhile now. The lady Artemis has arrived with grave news. Some of you may have known her huntress', Lily, Rory, Thalia and many others. After a terrible attack on their camp all of their group was murdered by an unknown force, except lady Artemis. She is heartbroken and has traveled a long way to come here. She will be watching the chariot races today, so in honour of her presence I would appreciate no foul moves. And if any of you are concerned, I have already begun to look into the forces that caused such a tragedy. Carry on, and get your chariots ready after breakfast."

Woah, that was a lot to take in. I had always wanted to be a huntress, their bravery and morals had enchanted me since I arrived at camp. Breakfast was silent after Chiron's announcement. The tables started emptying as everyone began setting up their chariots. Dy and I set off to the stables, retrieving our horses and taking them back to the chariot Natalie and Darren had been working on for us. On our arrival, Darren lit up with a grin. He was obviously pleased with his work. My eyes trailed across the other campers chariots; Sera and Kal were working together, they had made mechanical horses, which was quite impressive. They're both Hephaestus kids, so those mechanical horses might be something to watch out for. Hadley and Flora were in a team together, it seemed like Hadley had got her way with the horses, they were beautiful and white; although Flora seemed to have had her influence on the Chariot, you could notice some stolen objects worked into its structure from where I was standing. Right beside them was Alison and Aslynn, we definitely had to look out for them. Alison is a daughter of Athena and is quite a threat whenever we're on opposing teams and Aslynn, well Aslynn was just drunk a lot of the time but crazy good in battle. Wendy and Aella were together and as I expected, they had skeleton horses. I just hoped we got infront of them, it'd be easier to avoid their weapons. Ares kids are real violent. I spotted Crystal standing with Elsa, Jenna, Mary, Mia, Reese, Tris, Syd and Julie. They weren't competing today, which was good I guess, less competition. Elsa and Mia were apart from the group, they did want to compete today but Elsa accidentally froze their chariot, then when Mia tried to unfreeze it the metal didn't cope too well. Tatum, Trigger and Max were standing in a group. The Zeus kids thought the races were rigged because the Hades kids won last time. They got their big egos from their father, although that might be my father talking. They're not competing today, which was very good, they're tough competition.

I was bored with judging my fellow campers so I turned to talk to Dy, however she wasn't there. Tyler had joined Darren and Natalie and I could see them snickering at me from the corner of my eye. Great. I turned on my heel to face them, all of their faces immediately went blank, I narrowed my eyes and watched them all carefully, they're a tricky bunch, if you let your guard down they'll fuck you up.

"Where did she go?" I asked. Nat let out a giggle, a smile tugged at Tyler's lips but Darren stayed blank. I asked again, I was desperate.

"Come on guys, the race is gonna start soon. And I'm sure Chiron wouldn't be impressed if Dynemia disappeared."

"She's with Gabe, by cabin two." It was Tyler who replied, I think he was rather smug about it. He's got a girlfriend, Wendy, so he knows what they're likely to be doing.

I made my way to Hera's cabin, ironic, they're probably making out behind a cabin dedicated to a goddess that doesn't fuck around. Ugh gross, I can hear them moaning. Oh my god did he just tell her to go faster? Oh my god he's moaning louder. Oh my god I'm gonna puke. Oh my god. I ran around the corner, closing my eyes and yelled in their direction, but I was interrupted by their spurts of laughter. Slowly I opened my eyes, to see my sister and one of my closest friends rolling on the floor laughing at me. Fuck me, really? Fake moaning? This is low.

"You should have seen your face!" Gabe said proudly, Dy grinning with him and letting out a giggle, I narrowed my eyes at the pair of them.

"Seriously guys! I was freaked out!" I was blushing slightly, oh my gods this is embarrassing. They continued laughing and after a few minutes it became infectious, I let out a small giggle, which soon became full throttle rolling on the floor laughing. The three of us were soon interrupted by Sera, Kal and Aslynn. All of them looked like they were trying hard not to laugh. I looked to Sera, giving her my best try hard cute smile so she would help me up. She groaned but nonetheless, helped me up. Kal helped up Gabe and Aslynn Dy.

Aslynn looked between Dy and I, grinning her pre-battle grin.

"Race is gonna start soon, I hope you two are ready." She gave me a nudge jokingly and made her way to Alison, who looked a bit annoyed that Aslynn hadn't been there to plan theirs strategies. Kal and Sera told Dy and I to watch out, of course they were joking. Well, partly joking. Gabe kissed Dy, only on the cheek. He walked off and I said to Dy with a grin.

"What, if we win he'll give you one on the lips? Is that your real prize?" Her cheeks lit up red and she shrugged, looking embarrassed. She tried to cover it up, but I caught her before she could. We loaded into our chariot, her and I were both smart enough to be wearing armour. I packed in my bow and arrow, throwing knives, shield, sword and some water, you know, just in case. Dy led us to the starting line, I felt my adrenaline pumping through my veins as my senses switched to battle mode. This was going to be quite the race.
