I woke up to Ariel and Mary crowding my bed, their faces pressed up against mine while Savannah silently tried to scold them. Savannah Pierce, daughter of Athena. For a girl with battle smarts as impressive as hers, she wasn't very good with kids. Savannah was seventeen, Mary was thirteen and Ariel was eight. Mary was a daughter of Hypnos and in all honesty, her jumpiness was off for such a sleep dedicated demigod. Ariel was claimed by Poseidon the day she arrived, then decided to join the huntress's today. I expect she's scared of dying old, everyone is at that age. I remember there being one other camper who volunteered for the hunt, who was it again? I sat up tiredly, a gust of icy wind hitting me as soon as I was sat properly. Crystal, that little shit. I'd known her since Elsa was claimed by Khinoe, Elsa moved to Crystal's cabin and whenever I tried to talk to her Crystal spoke to me more than Elsa ever did.
"Morning lieutenant." Crystal said, with a mocking tone to her voice.
"Morning soldier, why aren't you dressed yet? You should've been ready at the crack of dawn!" I said, joining in on her joke. Savannah, Crystal, Mary and I laugh in unison, while a few giggles came from Ariel.
Well, that was enough sitting around. I got up from my comfortable bed and turned back to it to make it, only to find a set of hunting daggers and bow and arrow. This didn't strike me as odd, demigod, remember? And Artemis did mention gifts.
"They're enchanted, they appear whenever you need them." Savannah said, obviously noticing my curiosity. But why would I need them now? Oh well. I exited the cabin, watching Aslynn and Darren pass the door. Savannah and Crystal followed me out, speaking between eachother as we made our way to the dining pavilion, which I call the mess hall at times. It seems more suited when you see the state of it. We three took our place at the Artemis table, a few people looking at us with confusion. Hadley's face was among them.
I became bored with my grapes and looked through the tables groups, surprisingly I found a few people missing from their tables. Darren, Aslynn, Kal, Adriana, Julie, Flora, Elsa and Max. Well that's weird. Savannah had left our table to explain the situation to Alison, who happens to be her twin sister. Crystal disappeared too, which I dismissed. I could just check up on her later. You know Elsa? I've mentioned her a few times. She used to be my best friend, which she seemed to forget as soon as I was claimed. I could feel her eyes on me, probably making some scrunched up face to express her hatred.
I got settled into being a huntress quite quickly, it certainly helped on the battlefield. Weeks past and Artemis had not returned, Tatum had almost made herself sick three times due to worrying about Lady Artemis. She reminded me of a huntress from a long time ago who I'd heard stories of, Zoe was her name. That weird group that Darren, Flora and Elsa were in at the dining pavilion keep meeting, its kind of creepy. Oh my god, this is starting to sound like some kind of diary. But to get my point across, something was going on and I didn't want Elsa getting hurt. We had heard so many stories of new monsters, mortal deaths, even the gods were beginning to fear whatever was the source of them.
So what did this all mean? I certainly didn't expect to find out, and I certainly didn't expect it to be what it was, and I most certainly didn't expect these people to be behind it.
I could see Elsa on patrol from the archery hall, it was just her, so I made my way over to her. It's about time I talked to her anyway, especially with what's been going on lately. I was only a few steps behind her, but she was giving me the cold shoulder. Ironic.
"Hey." I seemed to split the silence in half, it was like Elsa was offended that I'd even speak to her.
"What do you want, Callista?" She asked, shrugging me off. It caught me a little off guard. Why did I have to want something to talk to her? I did want to know something, but I would talk to her without that reason.
"You're a big three kid, you have friends now, you haven't wanted to talk to me since you were claimed. Why else would you speak to me now?" She seemed to have noticed my struggle.
"What's going on with you and Darren? And that whole group for that matter." I asked, Elsa went frigid almost immediately. Was she scared of the question or something? When we were younger, I would always give her hand a little squeeze when we were scared we'd never be claimed. I did the same now, but when I gave I squeezed her hand she shoved me away, it wasn't gently either.
"Don't you dare. Don't you dare act like you care about me, you just want to know about the fucking plan Darren has! I'm not the only one at camp bitter towards their parents, Kal is, Aslynn is. And Flora." Elsa exclaimed in one breath of anger, my face spread with hurt after hearing Flora's name.
"Yeah, Flora. Your powerful friends aren't so perfect afterall. Oh I wonder what Hadley will say. Maybe she'll be as cold to Flora as I was to you. Darren killed that old fat monster making bitch, and has taken her place. He left earlier today with Aslynn. Had you even noticed?" She continued, each statement hitting me like a punch.
"Shows how much you care." Elsa finished, she had walked away from me now and in the direction of the forest. I didn't know what to say, I didn't know what I could do. And it made me feel so weak.
"I'm leaving too, with everyone who hasn't gone yet, others from camp might join us, but don't you dare. You don't deserve to be apart of our cause." She spat at me, her voice laced with hatred. She kept walking into the forest, and I kept watching. Why did I squeeze her hand? She joined up with some others in the shadows, I was probably the only one who could see them. They disappeared into the shadows, leaving camp half blood behind forever.
I just say there for a couple of hours, watching the forest. Nothing happened until around 11pm, when a flame wend up in the sky, leaving a message Darren had enchanted into the flame.
"An enemy that was once a friend is a monster who cannot be defeated."
Oh, shit.
