The two twins had caught up to myself, the woman and the little boy close behind. we were now nearing the wall. I could see the black man up ahead, standing next to another person. The closer we got to the wall, the more I could make out the mans features. He was tall, with a rough square jaw and stubble along his chin. He wore metal armour, the kingdoms symbol imprinted on his chest. Once we made it to the wall, my nerves were running rampant. I stuffed my gloves hands behind my coat in an attempt to hide the shaking.

"It's about time, I've been waiting forever" the black man mumbled, loud enough for everyone to hear.

"Let's get on with it then" the blonde woman chimed in.

The armour clad man pulled out a check list, words were scrawled on parchment atop of it. He began calling out names, much like one would in a classroom.

"It's nice to meet you all on your final day, thank you kindly for serving our just country" his voice was monotonous, like reading a script.

"First, Mr. Charles Frank, aged 39?" He called.

The black man stepped forward,

"That's me" he said in reply. The armoured man walked towards him, dragging his gaze along the black mans figure. Then,

"Stand by the gate, please" he turned and pointed towards the wall. I glanced over to see a massive door situated right beside us, one that I hadn't noticed was even there until right now. It was almost as tall as the wall itself, with intricate details flowing across it. I turned to look at the man, whom I now knew as Charles. He was walking towards the centre of the grand doorway, i stepped back slightly to peer over his shoulder. I noticed a much smaller door placed right between the centre of the larger, it was a more human sized door. It was less fancy, but looked more worn than the other.

"Next, Ms. Sophronia Pepperwart, 41?"

The chunky blonde lady stepped forward, submitting her self to the armoured mans scrutinising gaze. She gave him a look of distaste before tapping the little boy on the shoulder and walking towards Charles. She flashed me a sweet smile as she stood next to the tall man.

"Two, William and Will Hofferston, 20?"

The twins glanced at each other, each sending off an assuring smile before they stepped into the mans gaze. Then walked to join the others.

"One, Timothy Hay, 6?"

The small boy, who now stood beside me, froze. I felt bad for the boy, his family had probably left him for dead after finding out he was to be this years sacrifice. I bent down, hitching my skirt under my legs,

"It's okay, we will all be with you" I gestured to the others standing at the gateway.

"We will all make sure you are safe" I tried to smile past through the quivering of my body, half to reassure him but also to assure myself. I hope we will be fine, I really hope.

"Al...alright" his voice was shaking as he spoke. He stepped slowly towards the man, head hung low beneath his gaze, then walked towards the gate. Once he had joined the group the armoured man spoke again, I was the only one left,

"Kaya Montgomery, aged 17?"

I stepped forward, placing my self in his unrelenting gaze. I fidgeted nervously while his eyes racked over my body. Once I saw he was done, I turned on my heel, taking a step towards the gate. I was about to join the others when I felt a tug at my wrist. I turned, the armoured man had a firm grip on my arm. I gave a harsh glare towards him. Then all of a sudden I felt him slip something into my hand. I looked at him, confused. Then,

"Tell nobody you have this, it can open anything, be careful" he spoke in a hushed whisper, I could barley hear him. I had to focus on the movement of his mouth, practically reading his lips. I nodded.

Once he let go of my hand, I walked to join the group. I glanced down at my palm, curious as to what he had given me. All I found was a silver key on a rusted metal hoop, I shoved it into my skirt band. There was a large creaking noise as the ground shook, I looked up to find the smaller of the two doors opening. The sun from behind the wall hit my eyes, and I stared in shock at what lay beyond.
