I looked at the colourful autumn leaves as I drove towards my university. The trees with red, yellow and brownish leaves looked so much more colourful than the usual green ones. The soothing sound of the rustling of the leaves in the cool, gentle wind.I wished I could get out of this car and sit for some time in this wonderful atmosphere. But I knew I couldn't do that right now as my phone continued ringing and vibrating by continuous calls from my best friend.
I ignored the calls as I already knew she would be fuming with anger because I was late as usual. It doesn't mean that I always am late for everywhere I go, it more accurately means that I always am late for everything which is in the morning, like, most of the time, my lectures at the University. Because I was not at all a morning person, I preferred staying in bed till noon and the battle inside my mind whether I should get up or sleep a bit more always made me late as I always chose the later one.
I wondered why does she always get angry with me on the same thing. I have rarely ever been on time. But if it were not her hysterical calls which had set my phone on the continuous ringing, I still would have been in my bed. I smiled realising how well Jessica knows me.
I parked the car as I reached university. The freshly painted board with the words Maple Hills University written on it captured my attention. I kept my gaze fixed on it as I got out of my car and adored the board. As I lifted my gaze from the board, it landed on a familiar figure walking towards me.
A familiar figure wouldn't be the right words to describe him. He was what I have dreamt of ever since I was a kid. The tall, dark-haired guy, who had the darkest eyes I had ever come across which held a spark in them and the boyish mischievous smile which always brightened my day, definitely held a much more important place in my heart.
He was Alex Hunt, my childhood crush and the son of my father's best friend. His parents adored and cared for me and had been always there for me whenever I needed somebody ever since I lost my parents when I was just five.
Alex smiled widely as he walked towards me. I smiled back too while I tried to hide the effect which the sudden burning sensation on my cheeks due to him was causing on me.
" Good morning, Angel!" he greeted.
" Good morning, Alex!"
" This blue jacket looks gorgeous on you."
I was sure after this compliment, the blush that I was trying to hide, wasn't hidden anymore. I muttered a polite thank you very softly. What happened next was unexpected and had me dazed. He lifted his hand to touch my cheek, I held my breath. He removed his hand the next moment leaving the place on my face where he touched burning. He walked past me smiling while I stood there feeling the touch of his warm hand on my face which I wished stayed a bit longer.
But I didn't get the chance to concentrate more on this wonderful feeling as I saw Jessica glaring at me. If looks could kill, I would have definitely been dead by now. I ran towards her with the best puppy f I could put on.
" Oh, I'm so sorry! " I apologized to Jessica.
" I'm so done with your apologies, Angel! You can never be on time, can you?"
" Well, you know I can never be on time without you." I hugged Jessica warmly.
She hugged me back too. I let out a sigh of relief.
The worst part of this new semester was that I and Jessica were in different classrooms. I was sure I was going to miss her next to me and our never-ending gossips while the teacher was busy teaching. The pages of our notebooks were always filled with our talks than the notes which they were actually meant for. There was no other way we could talk while being stuck in a boring lecture.
But, the best part of this semester was that this was the last one before I graduated from the University. Don't get me wrong, I loved the place but I was more excited to get a job and start being independent. I was looking forward to that new phase in life.
We talked for a few minutes as I told her what Alex did just some minutes back and how good I felt by it. She remarked how I behaved like a lovestruck girl whenever I talked about him. I agreed with her observation.
The University bell rang, indicating that our lectures were about to start. We quickly left for our respective classes.
I looked around as I entered the class, most of the benches were already occupied, leaving me with the choice of four empty ones. Two of them were the front ones and one at the end while one was right in the middle.
I hated sitting in the front benches as I will miss on the occasional chances that I get to doze off in an ongoing class. If I did that on the first bench, I would surely be thrown out.
The case with the back benches was a bit different although it was a really good place to catch up on sleep. But the fact that I was a not-so-tall girl, I couldn't see the board at times when some important topic was being taught due to the people blessed with a towering height in front of me.
So I chose the last option left for me, the bench was in the middle. That would be perfect, except the benches behind the one chosen by me were occupied by the gossip girls group. They smiled at me as I took my seat. I faked a smile too as although the bench was at the right place but it would be difficult to spend this year with these six chirpy birds sitting in the benches behind mine.
I couldn't even change my place due to the silliest rule of this University. The place you occupy on the first day after the University reopens after each break is the one you would be occupying that entire semester unless you had a valid reason to change it.
Also, unlike some other Universities, the students here didn't change the classes for different lectures, the teachers were the one who did that. I found this rule good for lazy people like me who would not want to walk to a different place every hour.
Our English teacher, Miss. Hershey walked in and started teaching. I looked around and found all of the seats occupied except the one besides me. Well, this is what happens when your only best friend is in a different class than yours.
I stare at the empty place next to me and pick up my bag and place there. I grabbed the wooden keychain which had mine and Jessica's initial on it and sighed. This semester was surely going to be different without her next to me.
