Elise's POV
I looked down immediately, not being able to look at his crystal blue eyes. The eyes that I fell in love with. How could this happen? I didn't think when he said far away, it was this far. I just kept on looking down at my notebook filled with doodles, not wanting to make any eye contact. Because I know that if I did, I would sob.
Skylar nudged me and spoke, "You okay?"
It was meant to be a whisper but was louder than expected because it was silent in the room. Luke had stopped talking and even though I didn't look up to see, I could feel his stare on me. I could feel everyone's stare on me. I just nodded to Skylar's question and then went stiff again, not looking up still.
"Mr. Hemmings?" I heard the annoying voice of Hannah Sherk ask.
Luke cleared his throat and covered up his amazement with, "Ms. Davis, I'm waiting for you to speak."
Thats's when I looked up and saw the devil himself smirking. He knew exactly what he was doing to me. That bastard! Well, two can play at that game.
"I'm here," I said with attitude and confidence.
"Good. I'm glad. I wouldn't want you to be late for the first day of school, now would I?" He asked rhetorically.
"No, we wouldn't. Not at all."
Luke just smirked while I gave him a death glare.
"What was that about? It's your first day back and you already are going to have a bad girl reputation. And talking back to your teacher too? Are you even my friend?" Skylar laughed.
I just smiled back to her and kept on doodling.
"Skylar Donald?" I heard Luke ask.
"Here," Sky perk up.
"Yeah, I know. I can hear you whispering over there. First day of school really isn't working out for you or your friend, is it now? Maybe you'd like to tell us what you two are talking aboout?"
Skylar was now stiff as a board, sitting up right in her seat.
"No? And what about you Ms. Davis?" He smirks my way.
"No, once again, not at all." I retort back.
"Oh ok. Well then, stop talking. Or I will be forced to seperate you two. Is that understood, Ms. Davis and Ms. Donald?"
"Yes, of course, Mr. Hemmings," Skylar agrees.
Luke then went to finish off the rest of the names that were on his list.
Of course I blocked him out. I blocked everything out while I drew more doodles such as a few hearts, more like broken hearts, and spirals.
"Wait, you have an accent? Where are you from?" I heard the peircing voice from Hannah Sherk speak once again.
She's so annoying. I remember her from before I moved. She still has that voice that could scare anyone. I don't even know why she's the most popular person in the school. At least that's what it was like before I left. I wish that that had changed but sadly, I don't think it did.
"Sydney, Australia," I hear Luke answer her.
Why oh why did he answer her? I'm eighty-five percent sure that I told him about her and how much I hated her and how fake she was.
"Wow that's so cool! But why would you come to New York when you could've stayed there?" she asks.
"Well," he turns and he grins at me, which I find very strange, "I got a nice job here. It also pays way more than teaching math does back where I come from. Also, there were just some things that I had to get away from back in Sydney," he looks away from me, his smirk becoming weaker.
And mine becoming stronger. I don't know why, but seeing him a little weak was entertaining. All this time, I thought that he was off having a great life, probably getting wasted every night, banging girls, probably having the best time of his life, and yet here he was, teaching in New York City, looking anywhere but at me because I'm a little bit of the reason as to why he moved away from Australia.
"What are you running from? The Australian mafia?" asks one of the idiots that is considered society's typical jock, Brett.
"No," Luke laughed. "I just wanted to go and move and become independent. That's all."
"Doesn't sound like all," I mumbled.
"What was that, Ms. Davis?"
"Oh nothing."
"Gosh, you'd think that she'd act more appropriate considering it's her first day back at this school. It's everyone's first day and we're not acting like her. We all have manners," says Hannah acting as if for me not to hear but it was so obvious that she wanted everyone to hear.
"Yeah well not everyone here is as real as me. I'm not fake like all of you Barbie and Kens," I fire back.
"Okay now, let's not get into an argument the first day, shall we? We have the whole next nine months for that. And with you two in my class, I'm sure there will be plenty of it."
"Yes, Mr. Hemmings. Whatever you say," her smile seeming to fake to be real.
"Thank you, Ms. Shark."
"Oh, um, it's Sherk," she corrects him.
"You sure about that?" asks Luke.
Everyone started laughing. Even I admit to laughing. But then I stopped remembering how Luke always used to make me laugh and not Mr. Hemmings.
I decided to turn my attention back to my notebook and draw a bit more, drowning myself away from Luke's voice who was telling us what we were going to learn this year.
I'll just have my parents tell me what I'm going to learn when they go to back to school night.
As I was drowning Luke's voice out, I found myself drawing hearts with Luke's initials in it.
I scribbled them out, reminding myself to never write such things again.
The next thing I knew, the bell rang. I honestly think that I was the first one out of there.
"Elise! Elise! Wait up!" I hear Skylar calling me.
"Yeah what?" I ask once she is caught up with me and we walk to our next class.
"Damn, either you really like Mr. Hemmings or you really don't like him," she laughed.
Only if she knew.
"You two kept on smirking at each other too. If I didn't know any better, I would say that he was flirting with you. Or you were flirting with him," she nudged my arm and I just laughed.
This is going to be a long, long school year.
